Beyond I.T.I.N.E.R.A.T.I.O.N.S., at The Annex Gallery, The Most Merciful Thing in the World, by renowned American artist Trevor Paglen, was the first exhibition I visited in the current FotoFocus Biennial at its main venue. Open since October 1, it held its official reception only yesterday, on the 3rd, following a performance-lecture by Paglen. This carefully conceived exhibition has been curated by Kevin Moore, Ph.D., Artistic Director and Curator of FotoFocus.

In the Middle of the Endless Water, a solo exhibition by Julia Orquera Bianco curated by Carolina Cuervo at the Philip M. Meyers Jr. Memorial Gallery at the University of Cincinnati, brings together more than a decade of work by an artist whose practice has gradually moved from the personal experience of migration toward an inquiry into territory, memory, ecology, and alternative forms of knowledge.

I suppose that, like me, hundreds and probably thousands of viewers developed a dark sympathy for the character of Hannibal Lecter. The two actors who, to date, have embodied him most memorably are Anthony Hopkins and Mads Mikkelsen. The character displays extraordinary intelligence and self-control. He conducts himself according to his own rules and ethical codes. As viewers, we witness, from a dimension as safe as it is unreachable, exceptional moments in the life of a man capable of reading other people’s behavior with precision and redirecting it toward whatever advantage or benefit it may yield him. Sometimes material, almost always spiritual, and invariably symbolic. This mixture of power, mystery, and danger produces fascination and empathy.

In a couple of weeks, The Annex Gallery will receive an exhibition by Juan-Sí González. There are several generations of Cuban artists —the younger ones especially— with only a very blurred idea of who Juan-Sí is and what his role has been in Cuban visual arts during the second half of the twentieth century. Some do not know him at all. This does not surprise me. The revolutionary cultural bulldozer and State Security treated him much as the Soviet authorities treated Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. They did not dare then, and do not dare today, even to disparage him.

Photographer Jens G. Rosenkrantz Jr. opens Crossing the Border next Friday, September 4, in the main gallery of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas in Miami. This is only the second time this body of photographs, taken along an extensive stretch of the southern border of the United States, has been shown publicly. Its first presentation took place in Cuba, at Fábrica de Arte Cubano, in 2019. The simple fact of standing on one side or the other, within the same landscape and at the same moment, produces almost opposing ways of seeing. At times, the images offer glimpses of a silent violence, crouched and watchful, like snakes waiting for their chance.

For this series, Rubio & del Amo, a Murcia-based studio specializing in visual identity, editorial design and packaging, joins forces with Cruz más Cruz, the Madrid firm founded by José María Cruz Novillo and later consolidated with the arrival of his son Pepe. Two fairly complementary sensibilities feeding into a common project. Rubio & del Amo brings conceptual freshness to the graphic tradition through which Cruz Novillo has helped define the visual identity of contemporary Spain. Cruz Novillo, for example, designed some of the final series of peseta banknotes immediately before the arrival of the euro, so his participation in this proposal establishes a discreet bridge between Spain’s monetary memory and one possible future face of Europe.

In the mid-1990s, I had many printed copies of the Financial Times in my hands. Probably sometime between 1995 and 1997. I was fascinated by its design, the wan salmon of its pages and Ingram Pinn’s illustrations: its visual identity, basically. As for reading it, very little, I confess. It was an almost purely retinal experience, and little else. But it became clear to me that its texts were written for professionals...

The smell of fresh ink on a print just lifted from the press has a remarkable ability to turn devotees into addicts. So do the uneasy intervals built into the process, which forge a very particular bond with the craft. This lies at the origin of nearly every printmaking and screen-printing workshop. Another trait they tend to share is an unusual capacity for endurance. Taken together, these elements account, to a considerable degree, for the history of Tiger Lily Press.

Since Wednesday, August 12, Annex Gallery has been presenting Tiger Lily: Collective Impressions. Tiger Lily Press is a cooperative printmaking workshop founded in Cincinnati in 1979, conceived as an open space for practice, teaching, and the preservation of artistic printing techniques. Over several decades, it has brought together printmakers from different generations, providing access to presses, tools, workshops, and shared technical knowledge, while establishing itself as one of the city’s longest-standing independent printmaking communities.

Given its scale and significance, I will present my analysis of this project in several installments. These are the ten design proposals shortlisted for the next series of euro banknotes. At this moment, they are under the gaze of millions. Citizens of the euro area have been invited to choose their favorites in a survey that will remain open until September 21. The Governing Council will select one of them at the end of the year. I suspect it will not be the proposal that receives the most votes. Popular approval guarantees nothing. If time proves the selection to have been a blunder, those consulted will be the ones left to pick up the pieces.
