In 1977, North Carolina Sheriff Bobby Poteat of Caswell County denied accepting bribes to protect the 29 Truckstop, a brothel operating just south of Danville, VA, near the NC/VA line, during grand jury testimony. However, during the trial of Joseph Motley Whitehead, operators of the "b***y houses" testified that they had made payoffs to Poteat. Whitehead, whose family is well known and whose grandfather was a congressman, was convicted of accepting bribes and sexual favors in exchange for protecting the brothels, and was sentenced to 15 years.
