"And John Erskine, just after World War I, managed to launch a thing called the General Honors Course at Columbia. And these students were going to read great books. They were going to read a lot of them in one semester or a year throughout their time at Columbia. They were going to be part of this kind of elite type of training, but they were going to read great books. They were going to read them in translation. There was a change from the past. We're not going to make you learn necessarily Latin and Greek, but we are going to read great books. We'll read them in translation and that'll be good enough."
