I need some honest input and opinions from fellow writers and readers.

First off, before I ask this, I need to confess something. I’m an old fart. I figured full disclosure was necessary.

Now seriously...

I served during the original Desert Shield/Desert Storm from September 1990 to April 1991. To this day, I still have every letter my mom and I exchanged while I was overseas. I wish I still had the letters from my dad too, but after he passed, I lost track of what happened to them.

Lately I’ve been thinking about writing a memoir, or maybe just a personal historical account built around those letters and my memories of being there.

The thing I struggle with is this:

I wasn’t some famous war hero. I was a Specialist driving an APC for a radar team. Just an ordinary guy doing his job.

Part of me wonders if that’s exactly why the story matters. Another part of me wonders if anybody would actually care.

So I’d honestly love your thoughts.

Am I looking at this the wrong way and underestimating the value of an ordinary soldier’s perspective? Or am I fooling myself into thinking there’s a story worth telling here?

I am G. Scott Freeman, and Ferret Run started with a question I could not stop thinking about.
What would happen if someone woke up in a world where they should not exist?
At first, all I had was Diane standing in a ruined laboratory.
Then Lanell appeared.
Then the city of Rith. The collider. The secrets. The fear.
The more I wrote, the more I realized this was not just a story about another world.
It was a story about loneliness, trust, and what happens when one person gives you a reason to stop running.
