Skadi Freya Boot Camp part 3

A proud graduate of puppy boot camp and the Yin Yang boot camp with Nico, Skadi enters her prime teenage era with a big role to fill at Summit Pups.

I need a leader who speaks wolf with a calm confidence I can count on as Summit Pups sets out to conquer new horizons.

Leadership is the theme of this one.

How do we train that?

Make her aware of the things she does well and help her reach that next level.

One of my favorite leaders and a distant relative of mine Abraham Lincoln once said;

“Whatever you are, be a good one.”

Skadis boot camp reigns in the next evolution of Summit Pups. One focused on building a community of balanced, well-trained, healthy, happy pups along with their humans.

While Summit Pups are built to thrive in Winter, Summer is where we get our reps in to go harder the next Winter.

We will get as much as we can from the limited snow pack but the reality is it’s time to lace up those boots and start throwing some logs around.

As a part of our mission to be central to health and wellness for dogs and humans in the community Summit Pups is launching its initiative to bring together the dog community around a shared purpose in staying fit and bonding with our pups. No matter where you are at in your journey we’ll have offerings that meets you where you’re at even if it’s just the one arm bicep beer curls.

From a walk to the local brewery to a trail run and dip in the lake the program encourages my training philosophy to build connection with our pups by challenging ourselves a little each day.

We will start at sunrise 6 a.m. most days and keep it quick, fun, and low pressure. Depending where we are we’ll have coffee brewing with the option for a cold dip and sauna afterwards.

Keep an eye out for the first event posting. Aiming for mid April but until then Skadi, Niko and I will be scripting our workouts for the summer ahead!

As seasons shift Summit Pups takes the opportunity to blossom the parts of our vision we’ve buried as seeds for several months.

Yes the above photo is AI but this comes from the heart.

I 100% believe we exist in an area that can be a doggy “Blue Zone” of health and longevity. To those unfamiliar with the term; these are locations all over the world with the highest populations of “centenarians”, people who live past 100.

Leaning into my strength in providing exercise and training in spaces dogs can safely be free I seek to balance that out to welcome in the full conglomerate of dogs in our area.

Yes we will continue to specialize in those high energy working breeds and I am building a Summit Pup sled dog team. That will happen perhaps sooner than later. The value I present is not in fun sleigh rides it’s in tapping into the gifts our dogs have via their genetics.

How we do raise the potential of their gifts? An optimized diet that fits their personality, breed, energy level, lifestyle, budget, etc…

To be clear I am not certified as a nutritionist currently. I’m just here to facilitate the discussion and help unwind our pups gut. Mine is a puzzle as well is Skadi and Nico’s.

As my high octane crews age out of skiing days I want to foster a softer landing into the 2nd half of their lives and extend the window of hiking days with you.

By the way 100 ski days in sight with snow on the way! Winter has one more gasp for us.

Our next round of Boot Camp begins Monday with Mr. Nico

Where Skadi served to become the pack organizer creating the systems we need to thrive on a daily basis. Nico, the Samoyed is here to launch summit pups onward up the mountain.

You thought I would build this thing without a Pup that can pull? Think again, Nico is here for the long haul pun intended.

Get used to this fluff ball and my cheesy lines all over the marketing for the foreseeable future.

We love chaos. We thrive on chaos at Summit Pups. However I’ve come to realize we do need the balance and that’s why I am so excited for the future of these two, they really do bring the Yin and Yang to Summit Pups.

Flip your tassel Skadi! You are the first graduate of the Summit Pups Boot Camp!

Week 1 we built a sturdy foundation of obedience and social skills

Week 2 we tapped into her German Shepard genetics to organize and tuned her impulses under pressure within the pack, against wildlife, and in public.

Week 3 we broke the leash and began a 6 week process of building gentle communication with the e-collar. Through freedom we built trust that’ll allow her to be a dog with proper boundaries and control in place for wilderness and public settings.

I approach this Boot Camp and all dogs I train from the same principles that can be adapted to meet the full spectrum of dogs no matter the age, breed, or temperament.

Immersed in nature we bring out the raw genetics, build confidence with pack drive, and develop purpose attached to their strength in personality and highlighted skills.

Upon these principles we send pup home with the confidence to be a trusted companion for all your adventures.

Skadi has the potential to be a Swiss Army knife as scent genius and pack organizer. However her purpose if you ask her is as my sidekick. She’s the gate keeper to the pack but a terrible one. She’ll let all dogs in and feel welcome right away with a kiss then a nip of the heel to let them know not to run too far.

She has lots still to absorb as our next phase of training continues. She’s a living example of the Summit Pups processes developed over several years observing and working with dogs in the wilderness. It does translate to calm confidence when we hit the pavement.

Overdue update
I’ve been a little quiet lately. Took some time to reset and get my energy back in line after dealing with a personal loss — the mindset I teach the Summit Pups, I’ve needed to embody myself. I’m feeling grounded again and ready to get our adventures rolling. Thanks for sticking with me. Winter pack days, training, and fresh energy on the way.

Update 09/15 - 09/21

As Fall lays down on the close of Summer pack adventures a new queen has laid claim to her throne here at Summit Pups.

Her name is Domerie. A peak and a creek she’ll drink from for years. The source of Roslyn’s water she is as powerful as her features. She flows through diverse landscape, on into the Cle Elum, Yakima, Chelan rivers on out to the pacific. From the mountains to the sea she can handle it all.

“Flow like water my friend”

Like Bruce Lee who coined the phrase, she is a calm, confident, a fierce protege to the program.

Above all she is a Summit Pup and the judge to all future Summit Pups.

I hand the keys to you sweet Domerie. You Doberman queen with a salting of Shepard. I trust you.

08/08 - 08/14

Another week in the books at Summit Pups.

Highlights include some new pups joining the adventure pack and a local puppy getting broken in to the program with loads of potential.

I turned down the call to fight some wildfires to focus on this project here to build up the local pack and keep working on a strong transition to the colder months.

With that said yesterday was full of scouting missions for the winter program to create an offering for Snoqualmie Pass adventurers. We aim to take packs for epic romps while you get your turns in worry free of pup missing out on fun. We will prepare the pups for those backcountry missions through conditioning and training around skis, as well as obedience in the wilderness.

I am in the market for a puppy to mold as the prototype for my adventure dog business. Putting a feeler out for any new litters of pups looking for a home that will get the most out of them. They will be raised in a wonderful pack of dogs from different corners of the community and be given the opportunities in the sporting and SAR dog world.

Not focused on any 1 breed, I need an athlete who can handle snow and socialize well.
