Before lawns, most households grew their food. Not because it was trendy, but because it was normal. Victory gardens fed families during wartime. Immigrant families brought agricultural knowledge with them. Indigenous communities cultivated Land with reverence and reciprocity.

Food wasn’t a commodity — it was a relationship.

No longer are families encouraged to raise victory gardens or gardens in general. No longer do we seek to support ourselves. Now we work to fill the pockets of greedy capitalists who could care less for the Land and the fruit She yields.

There is a deep ache that comes to me when I look at Land that could be alive, and I see Her lying dormant and dying instead. I’ve felt it in my own yard, in the empty corners of my neighborhood, and most recently in the cement courtyard behind our local church building—a space that could be green, nourishing, and communal, but instead sits silently under the weight of poured concrete. It’s wild to me that we’ve normalized this.

Growing food is not just a skill. It’s a form of worship. It’s gratitude made visible. It’s care for creation. It’s the opposite of the sterile lawn culture we’ve inherited.

At this threshold of early harvest, I pause in gratitude for the Land beneath my feet — the living, breathing presence who has carried me, fed me, and taught me.

I sense a stirring in my soul, a peaceful awakening of my senses as the season begins to turn.

I didn't mean to disappear--i just felt myself go quiet these past two weeks. The heat, the drought, the heaviness of now and missing people and places I love... I kept reaching for words, but they felt dry in my hands.

Today, I was finally able to squeeze a drop of creativity into the paper.

May there be NO POOR AMONG US...

To consecrate all that we have, we sacrifice or give freely of our property, our time, and our talents, to the betterment of the whole, not just the one or ourselves.

We must not allow a casual culture or narrative to redefine this higher way of living. We must not permit ourselves to slip into the blindness that accompanies a lack of personal development, into a fiercely individualistic, anti-communal environment.

We NEED each other. May we all step outside ourselves more often to lift another, serve another, give to another and make certain that we all have what we need to not just survive... But thrive TOGETHER.
