In 2009, founder Dan Kathman landed his first corporate event contract. He had been making videos since he was a kid, for his high school, clubs, and in college.

One day, sitting in his first fraternity meeting, he had an idea: I bet I could make money filming this event, and no one else is doing it.

So he pulled out a student loan he didn’t need (he was already on a nearly full-ride scholarship), bought his first professional camera and computer, pitched the organizers an offer they couldn't refuse, and landed the contract and many others. Back then his deliverables were DVDs. This business ended up paying his way through college.

Sixteen years later, Kathman Studios has worked with national clients, international brands, and local companies. Dan has won awards, built a studio and office, spoken on stages, written a book, and continues to help other creatives go full-time, all while serving clients nationwide.

“Starting a business isn’t easy. Keeping it alive is harder. But the hardest thing is bouncing back from failure and doing it again and again.

When you’ve done this long enough, you realize a few things: business is just solving problems. Solve a problem for somebody, that’s a business. Most failures are smaller than your ego makes them. And confidence doesn’t come from faking it until you make it. It comes from doing it until it’s easy. Also, if you don’t put yourself out there, no one else will.

I’ve hit rock bottom and rebuilt four times in 16 years. It’s not easy. But you know what’s harder? Not doing it.

At some point, there is no Plan B. This is your life. This is who you are. And once you reach that level of certainty, the path becomes clear.”

It’s no longer weird to be online. Statistically, it’s weirder if you’re not.

But here’s the thing: you can’t base your entire business marketing strategy on how you personally feel about social media. The only thing that matters is your customer: your ideal customer profile (ICP).

Who are they?
Where are they?
Then…
How do you get their attention?
How do you talk to them?
How do you get them to know, like, and trust you?
And finally, how do you get them to buy from you?

The first two are the most important. The rest are just the starting points. Notice what’s missing? At no point are you asked how you feel about Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or marketing in general.

Your customers don’t care about your feelings toward social media. And if they don’t, your business shouldn’t either.

Business Content Hack: Q&A

Want endless content ideas? Just answer the most searched questions in your niche.

Start with Google, Quora, or ChatGPT to see what people are already asking. Then search your niche (or sub-topics) on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Find the top performing talking-head videos, scroll the comments, and look for questions with lots of engagement.

Copy all those questions into a spreadsheet. Use the question as your hook, and answer it in your video. Simple. Scalable. Proven to work.

Figure Out Your Ideal Customer → Make Content for Them → It Attacks Them → They Notice You → They Get to Know, Like & Trust You → They Buy → Repeat

Content Hack for Businesses: If you have five-star reviews on Google, Facebook, or Airbnb, you can easily turn them into video content that generates leads & sales.

Ask your happy customers to record that same review selfie-style on their phone (bonus points if it’s at your business). They may even edit it, do a voice over, and really over indulge to also use for their content. Sweeten the deal with a small incentive like 20% off their next purchase.

Now you’ve got authentic user-generated content (UGC) you can post forever. No big production crew needed, no time, no money, free marketing, minimal effort, just real people saying you’re great, and UGC content converts way better than you saying it yourself.

Small Business Content Strategy in 7 Simple Steps:

1. Start with your ideal customer. Who buys from you most often? Who would be your dream client? That’s your ICP (ideal customer profile).

2. Create content for that ICP. Not ads, just videos, photos, graphics, posts that speak directly to them.

3. Forget chasing viral. Businesses don’t need millions of views, they need the right views. Educate, entertain, inform, or inspire your ideal customer with content tied to the problems you solve.

4. Consistency pays off. The algorithm learns who your content is for, and starts pushing it to those people. Over time, they get to know, like, and trust you.

5. This creates inbound marketing. Your ideal clients start following, engaging, DM’ing, and buying. You don’t need a huge following, just the right audience.

6. Solve one problem for one person on one platform. Give away the how in your content, sell the implementation in your business. Don’t sell information, sell transformation.

7. The proof is everywhere. Small accounts with just a few likes are pulling steady leads and six-figure months. I’ve seen the numbers behind the scenes, it would blow your mind. On the flip side, I know people with millions of followers and views who are broke because they rely on views and sponsorships alone. That’s the advantage of being a business, you already have the backend built. If the right people just become aware of you, that’s often all it takes. That’s why businesses can do crazy revenue without crazy follower counts. Some even turn off paid ads because their organic content works so well.

8. The formula is simple: define your target, study what’s working in your niche, create for them, post consistently, get leads, close sales, repeat.

About Dan Kathman Studios

I've had a camera in my hand since I was 7 & started working professionally at 19.

I am a professional photographer & video maker.

I'm an American Movie Award winning screenwriter. I have a degree in Video Production from USF. I've had a camera in my hand since I was 7, I was the camera guy in most of the clubs in high school & college, and I went pro my first year in college at 19.

I've worked with National & Local companies as well as produced short films, ads, marketing & music videos. I've worked on regional commercials, feature films and much more. I've also worked with well known brands. As a photographer I primarily shoot portraits & headshots, but I shoot a lot of different type of photography that I love.
