This is what I mean when I talk about inclusive landscape design. For me, inclusivity starts with the stories that we tell about how the world works and who participates. We use these stories to define our problems and their solutions, therefore:

We design what we define.

I want to design for inclusion.

Places for people to rest. Just to exist comfortably in place. Rest is essential for people to operate and we don't account for how taxing navigating the built environment can be on our bodies and minds. Everyone needs rest and we can design for it.

What a joy in itself to read! We don't understand the performances we all put on in public and if we do not talk about it, we do not design for it.

Some inclusive insights from my own life these past few weeks. I develop these in conversation with friends, family and strangers.

The discussions themselves are whimsical in nature and it reminds me how differently we each move this world and how we can celebrate that!

The Neuroscapes Design Collaborative has been having monthly conversations to better understand what neurodiversity (ND) means in our profession.

We realize that our biggest hurdle is awareness. Many people do not understand how ND looks and therefore their inclusive initiatives may be lacking.

We want to open up the conversation.

We want to build a foundation of language and communication about neurodiversity and improve our skills around discussing inclusion.

If youre interested in joining us virtually on July 30th, rsvp by July 26th by emailing [email protected].
You will receive a link to the meeting a day or so before the discussion.

We are limiting the spoken conversation to 6 people for this first time, but anyone can join in the chat and listen in.

I'm introducing a new series of posts all about identifying inclusive design opportunities in landscapes. It's important and it can be fun, dare we say...whimsical. Also, it doesn't have to be intimidating for those who may not have the same level of awareness about inclusivity as others.

We are starting with swings.

I am a big fan of swings, not only because they are fun, but because they help families like mine feel comfortable.

Want less mosquito bites this year? Try planting for their predators!

Pollinators gardens also bring in dragon flies who eat mosquitos. The native pollinator gardens also attract birds and bats!

Mosy may not think about allergies as apart of inclusive design but it is!! Some people are allergic to mosquito bites and spaces that reduce mosquito/human encounters can help keep people safe in these summer months.
