In addition to publishing books about Cleveland history since 1980, CLP created a foundation -- one devoted to supporting Cleveland cultural institutions and residents in Cleveland. Jim Toman and Greg Deegan started the Cleveland Landmarks Press Foundation in 1999 by setting aside $50 each every other month. Then they started donating 10% of annual book sales to the CLPF. They raised funds mainly through the support of friends and family members over the years. Today, the CLPF has more than $515k.

This year, the CLPF sent grants to the Karamu House, Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. The CLPF has now given more than $23k to the cultural gems of Cleveland.

In addition, the CLPF provided two $5k grants to two amazing young women. Naima Murray is a first-year student at Kent State University majoring in hospitality and event management. Her dream? One day she wants to open a cafe with her family because she "loves the idea of working with a team to give people a great experience."

Lavonna Carter is a first-year student at Kentucky State University majoring in criminal justice. She started her senior year at Glenville High School living in her car -- and by the end of her senior year she had been named Glenville's valedictorian. She's hoping to go to law school because she is "passionate about fighting for justice and helping those who cannot fight for themselves."

So, at the end of this calendar year, if you're looking to give money to a worthwhile cause that makes Cleveland a better place -- and one with absolutely no overhead -- we appreciate you considering the CLPF. Feel free to send a donation to:

Just released!

Resisting Segregation documents how Cleveland Heights citizens challenged the lack of housing opportunities for African Americans. In 1964, a group of white women, inspired by the national civil rights movement, joined with black citizens – leaders and visionaries – to fight for racial equality and open up Cleveland Heights for all. Over the next 12 years, they transformed a virtually all-white suburb into an enduring, integrated community with a vibrant civic culture.
