Despite being nestled between two larger, international airports — Cleveland Hopkins and John Glenn Columbus — Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) is faring well, especially for a regional airport, including several new routes.

Starting Friday, Nov. 7, CAK will offer a nonstop flight to Wilmington, North Carolina, operated by Breeze Airlines. It’s the 24th non-stop route across the four airlines that serve the airport: Allegiant Air, American Airlines, United Airlines and Breeze.

It’s all part of CAK’s exceptional growth driven by leisure travel and low-cost carriers, positioning the airport as an increasingly competitive alternative to Cleveland, Columbus and other regional hubs.

“Not only (is CAK) surpassing pre-pandemic passenger levels, but again, also reaching that record number of non-stop (flights), many unique to Northeast Ohio,” said Ren Camacho, president and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport.

Compared to 2024, CAK has added 28% more seats in the market — including bigger planes and more frequent flights — and has 24% more flights this year. And looking ahead to 2026, airport leadership is looking to add 50% more seats and 45% more flights in the first quarter of the year.

Cleveland-based apartment owner Millennia Cos. has announced that a building it owns in Downtown Cleveland is facing foreclosure, its third building this year to deal with such a threat.

Angelica Sinito, the company’s chief investment officer, issued a statement on Monday, Nov. 3, disclosing that 75 Public Square is being foreclosed upon by the Ohio Water Development Authority.

Millennia secured mortgages for $27 million in 2020 to convert the 144,000 square foot, 15-story office building to 114 apartments, Crain’s reported at that time and records show. That financing included a $21 million loan from Tristate Capital Bank in Pittsburgh, $3 million from the Advance Cleveland Development Fund, and another $3 million loan from the state of Ohio.

According to its website, Millennia owns and operates more than 280 apartment developments in 26 states. It also owns Key Tower, one of Cleveland’s priciest and best-performing office buildings — and one of its largest with 1.5 million square feet of space. That space is nearly 95% leased, according to CoStar data.

Millennial Cos., which owns the building among others downtown, says it was caught by surprise when one of its lenders initiated foreclosure proceedings while others were willing to work with it.

Cleveland State’s decision nearly a year ago to eliminate wrestling, softball and women’s golf after the spring semester left about 80 athletes and several coaches without teams.

The university cited financial pressures and roster balance as reasons for the cuts, but for the players and staff who lived through it, the announcement felt more personal — an abrupt end to their seasons and, for many, their time at Cleveland State.

“I told the administration, ’You put me and our staff in a bad situation, but we’re adults, so we’re going to get through it,” said Josh Moore, Cleveland State’s former wrestling coach, who is now the head coach at Kent State. “But these kids, they’ve never experienced anything like this.”

Since then, most Cleveland State wrestlers have found new homes. Of the 37 athletes on the roster, 25 transferred to other schools — nine of them following head coach Moore to Kent State. Others landed at programs across the country, from Ohio State to Cal State Bakersfield to Life University in Georgia. The rest either graduated, used up their eligibility or stepped away from college athletics altogether.

The same pattern played out in Cleveland State’s women’s programs. At least three members of the women’s golf roster transferred to other schools. Another player graduated, and a few others chose to stay at Cleveland State, including Abby Blackburn, who now serves as a student representative on the university’s board of trustees.

If you’re one of the more than 7,000 fans who plunked down a season-ticket deposit for Cleveland’s new WNBA team, you might have spotted a survey asking for your thoughts on what to call it.

The survey listed a handful of options currently under consideration, including names that keep surfacing online: Founders, Crown, Rockers, Novas, Riveters, and Sirens.

So those must be the finalists, right? Not necessarily. While those six may be in the mix — and Rockers definitely is — team officials say it’s way too early to carve anything in hardwood.

Rock Entertainment Group (REG) — the Cavaliers’ parent company — is still deep in the data-gathering phase, pulling opinions from surveys and focus groups.

To help that process, REG brought in a third-party firm to run the surveys and compile fan feedback. Cleveland’s jersey design is due to Nike within the next year, and the franchise still has to line up two corporate patch partners to include in the final look, so the clock is ticking.

After closing its Downtown Cleveland location in September following a 17-year run, Phoenix Coffee will soon be back in the area.

Phoenix has signed a lease in Skyline 776 (776 Euclid Ave.), a recently opened luxury apartment building. The new space is a block away from Phoenix's former shop at 1700 E. 9th St.

"We get to be in the same neighborhood that we've been in for such a long time, and hopefully retain the customer base, while also having a much brighter space," Phoenix General Manager Toby Reif told Crain's. "It's a little closer to more hotels and residential than commercial."

The open-concept space is 1,058 square feet and is within the first-floor lobby of the Skyline 776 building, Love said. The space is brighter and colorful, Reif said.

"We are moving as fast as we can and are looking forward to being back downtown," Reif said.

Amazon One Medical, a health care service subsidiary of Amazon, opened its first primary care office in Northeast Ohio on Wednesday, Oct. 29, through a partnership with the Cleveland Clinic.

The new Amazon One Medical office is located in Avon at 36040 Detroit Road and is the company’s first office in the region. The company plans to establish a second location in Shaker Heights, located at 20300 Farnsleigh Road, by early January 2026, according to a news release.

"Primary care is the foundation of comprehensive health care, and we’re excited to expand access to these services with our first office to serve Northeast Ohio residents," said Dr. Pooja Kamath, office medical director of Amazon One Medical, in a news release.

The health care arm of Amazon was formed from a $3.9 billion acquisition of primary care provider One Medical in 2023. The e-commerce company established partnerships with health systems across the U.S. to fuel its growth, Crain’s previously reported.

Over the last two years, Amazon One Medical has expanded its footprint, currently owning and operating over 240 offices across more than 20 U.S. regions, the company said in an email.

Construction teams are in place for big projects that are about to kick off the ambitious, multiyear modernization plan at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Airport officials recently announced partnerships with three companies — CLE Connection Group, Jacobs and Shook Construction — that will handle key elements of Hopkins' $2 billion Terminal Modernization Development Program, branded as CLEvolution.

First out of the gate is the Gold Lot Parking Development. Shook is starting design work this month and construction early next year on the $22.5 million project, which will add about 1,600 parking spaces by late 2026 or early 2027.

The lot will be constructed adjacent to Concourse D, "setting the foundation for future landside improvements and easing parking access for travelers as modernization progresses," the airport said in a news release.

Shook, in its own news release, said that by "working with the City of Cleveland and through partnerships," the company "will maximize opportunities for local workers and small businesses, bringing a positive economic impact to the region."
