*Seepia – A nightmarish debut that set the tone for Portal’s singular vision. Chaotic, murky, and suffocating, Seepia introduced their warped take on death metal with swirling riffs and grotesque atmospheres.

By now, DEATHHAMMER need no introduction. For 20 years strong, this insatiable Norwegian duo have seemingly been at the forefront of the still-burgeoning blackthrash movement; in fact, one could successfully argue that the band largely jumpstarted that resurgence and have continued to be its kings. However, "blackthrash" by definition undersells DEATHHAMMER's irresistible (and irresistibly evil) charm: from 2010's Phantom Knights cult debut album on to the furious pair of 2012's Onward to the Pits and 2015's Evil Power - both of which were released by HELLS HEADBANGERSto widespread international acclaim - sole members Sadomancer and Sergeant Salsten have steadfastly played both thrash metal AND black metal. But most importantly, DEATHHAMMER play HEAVY METAL - raging metal, evil metal, whatever you want to call it - and the next pair of 2018's Chained to Hell and 2022's Electric Warfare cemented that eternal metal magick.

As it goes in the DEATHHAMMER world, full-lengths may take some time - at least three years, sometimes four - but when they arrive, they remind the underground why these Norwegians are still so vital...and VIOLENT. Witness their sixth album, Crimson Dawn. Aptly titled, Crimson Dawn rips and rages with characteristically OTT power - a riot of violence, an expurse of so**my, utterly infernal overkill - and the blood flows freely across Nordic snow. But, for however consistent DEATHHAMMER may be, it all underlines how stout and invigorating their songwriting is to begin with. Credit that to the duo's unique interplay, both from a compositional and technical standpoint.

Recorded with all-new equipment, Crimson Dawn marks the first time Sadomancer and Sergeant Salsten played guitar on each other's songs; prior to this record, the two would exclusively play guitar on the songs they each wrote. As a result, it all sounds like DEATHHAMMER but most definitely a more dynamic one, rendered all the more powerfully with their best drum production to date. The album was mixed by fellow maniac Arild M. Torp (NEKROMANTHEON / Abhorration) - "It sounds just as violent as we hoped for," says Sadomancer - and he even rips a guest solo on "Legacy of Pain." Other guests include Bowel Ripper of Impugner with a nasty solo on "Stygian Lust," a track that has riffs dating back almost 20 years.

Above all, Crimson Dawn once again proves that DEATHHAMMER are able to play 666-megaton metal but skillfully show a variety of sides to it, from ultra-violent ragers to mid-tempo gallops to even "epic s**t," such as the truly-titled climactic closer "Into the Blackness of Hell." Few bands in death metal history have had a legacy as unique and grotesquely compelling as Necrophagia. With Moribundis Grim, the long-dormant cult rises once more—this time to deliver its final chapter. Unearthed from the vaults of the band’s final years, this posthumous release is more than just a tribute—it’s a fitting and feral farewell from one of the genre’s original architects.

Composed between 2016 and 2018 by Killjoy, Serge Streltsov, Shawn Slusarek, and Jake Arnette, these songs were left incomplete after Killjoy's untimely passing. But thanks to the dedication of the surviving members and the contributions of longtime allies like John McEntee (Incantation), Titta Tani (ex-Goblin), and Mirai Kawashima (Sigh), Moribundis Grim was brought to life—reeking of death, decay, and pure horror-lust.

From the opening moments, the record plunges the listener into that unmistakable Necrophagia mood: eerie synths, thick walls of guitars, and unrelenting drums conjure an atmosphere of rotting cellars and cryptic rituals. Killjoy’s final vocal performances are front and center—vile, theatrical, and unmistakably his—while the guest vocals and instrumental contributions complement rather than distract, creating a twisted symphony of the macabre.

The pacing is classic Necrophagia: slower, crawling passages ooze dread before giving way to frenzied, carnivorous assaults. The riffs are massive and gnarled, laced with that horror-punk touch the band always excelled at. Even in moments of sonic disjointedness, likely a result of the album’s patchwork origins, the experience remains cohesive in spirit—fueled by reverence and death-fueled inspiration.

What makes Moribundis Grim special is its raw honesty. It doesn’t feel like a polished monument—it feels like a séance, a genuine invocation of what Necrophagia always stood for: gruesome horror, unfiltered passion, and a refusal to play by genre rules. It’s not just a final album—it’s a final act, and one that resonates with fans who’ve followed the band since the early demo days.
In a world where so many legacy releases feel sanitized or hollow, Moribundis Grim feels intimate, haunting, and deeply personal. A worthy tombstone for one of death metal’s most deranged pioneers.
