🦸🏻‍♂️ Many people are surprised that Cleveland is the home of Superman, says Cleveland filmmaker Rob Montague.

“Not a lot of people know that Jerry [Siegel] and Joe [Shuster] are from Cleveland,” he says. “I found that out when I was in my early 20s and I was just like, How inspiring to be from [Cleveland]. Especially coming from an angle of wanting to be a filmmaker, and I want to do something that’s much bigger than where I’m from.”

Montague has spent a decade attempting to create a film and like Jerry and Joe, he’s faced many obstacles and setbacks as a Cleveland filmmaker.

🥙 After 30 years, Aladdin’s Eatery delivers on its promise of fresh food in a family environment.

Sandra Daher wanted to fit in. Yet, the middle schooler was different than most of her classmates. Daher’s first language was Arabic. She was raised in Kuwait and is of Lebanese descent. Hummus filled her lunchbox instead of Lunchables. Family vacations were trips back to Lebanon to visit family — trips that eventually changed her outlook.

“I realized that was part of me,” says Daher. “The memories I have of growing up are eating our food around the table with my family, speaking the language, all the traditions we had. I started to value it as I grew up.”

The Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art wouldn't be what it is today, if not for John Ewing.

🎬 The founder and director has led the organization through numerous changes, watching a key part of local cinema bud and blossom over the decades. In 1991, the theater added stereo cinema. In 2015, it changed its venue, from the now-demolished Aitken Auditorium on East Boulevard to its state-of-the-art Peter B. Lewis Theater at 11610 Euclid Ave. In 2021, it moved into new territory, streaming and premiering online during the pandemic.

Through it all, there were the movies — the premieres, the classics, the experimental, the artsy, the oddball — and about 10,000 of them, Ewing thinks, since he started.

“I think that’s a very reasonable estimate,” he says, taking a moment to think the number over. “And that’s not short films. Those are feature-length films.”

Wade Oval Wednesday watchers took shelter from the rain and heat in Severance Music Center for last night’s unique performances.

Stix, an all-student jazz band, wowed the crowd with improvised sets and conversational riffs that sprouted from one another. Later, The Cleveland Orchestra took their regular Severance seats and navigated the room through five masterful pieces led by conductor Vinay Parameswaran.

Meet your neighbors and the faces behind some of Cleveland's favorite haunts through the curious camera lens of John Skrtic, the Cleveland Public Library's chief of special projects and collections.

Bill "Rock" Rockwell
While in line at the wonderful Biagio's Donut Shop and Pizzeria in Eastlake, I overheard many of the staff happily shout out, "Hi, Coach." I turned to see Bill "Rock" Rockwell, the defensive line football coach for the state champion Saint Edward team. It was great talking with coach Rockwell about the St. Ignatius vs. St. Ed’s rivalry, how exceptional this era of Ed's teams is, and Ohio high school football in general.

William Ruiz
I met up-and-coming boxer William Ruiz while he was sparring in a local park. William's journey began when he took a boxing class at the Estabrook Recreation Center, in the Ohio City neighborhood, and immediately fell in love with the sport. William now works to pay for private boxing lessons, constantly improving his skills and passionately working toward making a name for himself in the boxing world. His dedication and hard work are truly inspiring.

Darrell and Bacon
I have regularly waved to West Side resident Darrell Farley, who can often be seen in his front yard with his best bud, Bacon — a large pig with a fondness for apples. I finally stopped to speak with Darrell, and he told me all about his pal, including that Bacon is 8 years old and has a continuous parade of regular visitors who pass by to say hello.

The river fire may be the big joke, but it got the nation serious about the environment. Congressman Louis Stokes recalled the work that went into the Clean Water Act of 1972 for a story we wrote in 2009 marking the 40th anniversary of the fire.

06/22/2024

Sealed off for the vast majority of the year, the Veterans Memorial Bridge’s lower level offers a rare glimpse at Cleveland’s past. Old metal tracks line the floors, a long walking path gives expansive views of the city skyline and original subway-tiled station spaces are visible where the bridge meets the ground. There are even parts of old cars around to tour.

🚋 It’s a peek into the city’s former streetcar system, which ran in the space when the bridge opened in 1918, all the way up to 1954.

But every so often, the bridge opens to the public — including this weekend. You can tour it from noon until 11 p.m. tonight.

“Clevelanders love to take pictures of this bridge. I think when you’re under here, you get a greater appreciation for the incredible craftsmanship that went into the construction,” says Mera Cardenas, the executive director of Canalway Partners.
