Back down memory lane

We are thrilled to announce a partnership with retired and active firefighters from the Shaker Heights Fire Department to restore our 1917 American LaFrance fire engine! We’ve completed the first big step in the project by relocating the engine to SHFD Station No. 1. A huge THANK YOU to the Shaker Heights Professional Firefighters who came to the museum to help push the LaFrance out of the garage!

The 1917 American LaFrance was the first fire engine purchased by the Village of Shaker Heights and was later used by the Village of Beachwood. The Shaker Historical Society acquired the truck in late 2007, and it underwent mechanical restoration by Ted Elder in 2013. The LaFrance is a familiar sight to many in Shaker Heights thanks to past appearances in the city's Memorial Day parade.

The engine has been stored in our garage since it experienced mechanical issues in 2018, so we’re especially excited to see it on the path to restoration seven years later!

Reminder: Due to the Memorial Day holiday, there will be a one-day delay in trash/recycling collection this week. Monday's route will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday's on Wednesday and so on.
