FORECAST DISCUSSION
We are entering a complex and festive 10-day period characterized by a transition from a strong Pacific-originating ridge to a more active southern stream jet pattern. As we move toward the Christmas holiday, a high-pressure system currently anchored over the Ohio Valley will slide eastward, allowing for return flow from the Gulf of Mexico. This will transition our current cool, dry air mass into a much milder and moisture-rich environment by mid-week.
The primary meteorological driver for the Christmas period will be a shortwave trough lifting out of the Southern Plains. This feature will introduce isentropic lift over the region, leading to widespread cloud cover and light rain chances for the holiday. Following Christmas, we expect a brief period of subsidence (sinking air) as a weak ridge builds in, providing a window of dry weather before a more significant cold front approaches for New Year's Eve. We are also monitoring a block in the upper atmospheric flow near Greenland—the Negative North Atlantic Oscillation (-NAO)—which could slow down these systems and keep us in a damp, "wedge-like" pattern (CAD) for the latter half of the week.

DETAILED FORECAST
__________________________________________________
Monday Dec 22nd, 2025
High: 52°F / Low: 32°F
Rain Chance: 0%
Expected Conditions: Sunny ☀️
Discussion: A classic post-frontal day. High pressure is centered to our northwest, filtering in dry, continental air. Radiational cooling tonight will be efficient, leading to a light freeze for most of the region.
__________________________________________________
Tuesday Dec 23rd, 2025
High: 55°F / Low: 35°F
Rain Chance: 5%
Expected Conditions: Mostly Sunny 🌤️
Discussion: The high-pressure system begins its slide toward the Atlantic coast. Winds will begin to shift from North to Northeast. This is a quiet "travel day" across Georgia with no significant weather hazards.
__________________________________________________
Wednesday Dec 24th, 2025 (Christmas Eve)
High: 58°F / Low: 44°F
Rain Chance: 20%
Expected Conditions: Increasing Clouds ☁️
Discussion: Moisture advection increases as a low-level jet begins to pull air from the Gulf. This will cause mid-to-high level clouds to thicken by sunset. A stray shower is possible after midnight as the atmosphere saturates.
__________________________________________________
Thursday Dec 25th, 2025 (Christmas Day)
High: 62°F / Low: 50°F
Rain Chance: 40%
Expected Conditions: Cloudy w/ Showers 🌦️
Discussion: See the special "Christmas Forecast" section below for hour-by-hour details. The region will be under a mild, damp flow.
__________________________________________________
Friday Dec 26th, 2025
High: 60°F / Low: 42°F
Rain Chance: 30%
Expected Conditions: AM Rain / PM Clearing 🌥️
Discussion: The weak shortwave passes to our east by noon. Behind it, a weak surface boundary will clear out the low-level moisture, leading to a brighter afternoon but cooler evening.
__________________________________________________
Saturday Dec 27th, 2025
High: 54°F / Low: 34°F
Rain Chance: 0%
Expected Conditions: Fair & Cool 😌
Discussion: Surface high pressure builds in from the Great Lakes. This is a dry air mass with lower dewpoints, making it feel crisp and seasonal.
__________________________________________________
Sunday Dec 28th, 2025
High: 52°F / Low: 36°F
Rain Chance: 10%
Expected Conditions: Partly Cloudy ⛅
Discussion: Clouds begin to stream in from the west again as the upper-level flow becomes more zonal. No major rain chances, but the sun may be filtered at times.
__________________________________________________
Monday Dec 29th, 2025
High: 57°F / Low: 40°F
Rain Chance: 20%
Expected Conditions: Mostly Cloudy ☁️
Discussion: A warm front starts to lift northward from the Gulf Coast. This overrunning pattern will keep skies gray, and a few light showers or drizzle patches are possible, especially in the mountains.
__________________________________________________
Tuesday Dec 30th, 2025
High: 61°F / Low: 48°F
Rain Chance: 60%
Expected Conditions: Widespread Rain 🌧️
Discussion: A stronger storm system develops in the Mississippi Valley. Strong synoptic-scale forcing will bring a period of moderate to heavy rain to Northeast Georgia. Instability is low, so thunder is unlikely, but it will be a "soaker."
__________________________________________________
Wednesday Dec 31st, 2025 (New Year's Eve)
High: 55°F / Low: 38°F
Rain Chance: 40%
Expected Conditions: Breezy & Cooler 🌬️
Discussion: See the "New Year's Eve" section for more details. A cold front will be sweeping through during the day.

CHRISTMAS FORECAST 🎄
__________________________________________________
A mild but damp Christmas is in store for Northeast Georgia. While we won't see a "White Christmas," it will be comfortable for travel between family gatherings, though you'll want the umbrella handy!
Hour-by-Hour (Dec 25th):
8:00 AM: 50°F - Overcast, patchy fog. 🌫️
10:00 AM: 53°F - Cloudy, 20% chance of a light shower. ☁️
12:00 PM: 57°F - Occasional light rain, mild. 🌦️
2:00 PM: 60°F - Cloudy skies, showers likely. 🌧️
4:00 PM: 62°F - High for the day, persistent light rain. 🌦️
6:00 PM: 59°F - Rain tapering to drizzle. ☁️
8:00 PM: 56°F- Mostly cloudy and damp. 🌬️
Discussion: The holiday is dominated by Isentropic Lift (warm air riding over cooler air at the surface). This creates a persistent cloud deck and periods of light, "misting" rain rather than heavy downpours.

NEW YEAR'S EVE FORECAST 🎆
__________________________________________________
Wednesday, December 31st, 2025
As we ring in 2026, the weather will be turning significantly colder. A strong cold front will move through the region during the early afternoon hours.
During the Day: Highs will reach the mid-50s early, but temperatures will begin falling by 3 PM. Expect breezy conditions with scattered showers.
Midnight Celebration: By the time the clock strikes midnight, temperatures in Commerce and Gainesville will likely be in the lower 40s, with wind chills in the 30s. Rain should be exiting the region to the east, leaving behind a cold, clearing sky for the first morning of the new year. 🎇

SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK ⚡
__________________________________________________
Severe Weather Outlook Discussion
For the period of Dec 22nd through Dec 31st, the overall severe weather threat remains Very Low. The primary systems moving through (on Christmas and Dec 30th) lack the instability (CAPE) and strong surface-based lift required for tornadic activity or large hail. The Dec 30th system will have strong wind shear, but the cold, stable air at the surface should prevent these winds from mixing down to the ground.

WINTER WEATHER OUTLOOK ❄️
__________________________________________________
5-Day Outlook (Dec 22-26)
There is zero chance of winter precipitation for Northeast Georgia during the first five days of this forecast. While it will be cold enough on Monday and Tuesday night, there is no moisture present. Conversely, when the moisture arrives for Christmas, the entire atmospheric column will be well above freezing.
Long-Range Outlook & Polar Vortex Discussion
Looking toward the end of December and into January, long-range ensemble models (GFS/ECMWF) are showing a neutral Arctic Oscillation (AO). We do NOT see any immediate signs of a major Polar Vortex disruption that would bring sub-zero temperatures to Georgia in the next 10-14 days.
However, long-range data hints at a potential "pattern flip" around January 5th-10th. Some models are suggesting a Gulf Low development during that window. If the cold air behind our New Year's system lingers, there could be a narrow window for "wintry mischief" in the higher elevations of Union, Towns, and Rabun counties (specifically near Blairsville and Clayton).
Disclaimer: This is a simple discussion of long-range possibilities. At this time, no snow is forecast for the region. These models are subject to significant change and are currently too far out for accurate predictions.

FINAL THOUGHTS
__________________________________________________
The final days of 2025 will be active but generally mild for Northeast Georgia. A chilly start this Monday gives way to a damp, mild Christmas. We then see another soaking rain event just before New Year's Eve, followed by a sharp cool-down for the holiday festivities. Please drive carefully if traveling on Christmas Day, as roads will be slick from the persistent light rain.
