The The Northeast Georgia Weather Center has issued an EXTREME COLD Pet-ALERT! For Tonight Beginning at 09:30PM EST

EXTREME COLD Pet-ALERT
ISSUED: 12/29/25 9:30PM ET
VALID UNTIL: 12/30/25 11:00AM ET
WHERE: All Northeast GA Counties
COMMERCE GA FORECAST OFFICE

SUBJECT: The Northeast GA Weather Center has issued an Extreme Cold Pet-ALERT for all Northeast Georgia Counties that goes into effect this evening beginning at 9:30PM-ET until 11:00AM-ET on 12/30/25.

DISCUSSION: Temperatures are beginning to plunge across the Northeast GA Region with low temperatures in the low to mid 20s expected with temps in the upper teens possible in some of the higher elevations. These temperatures are extremely dangerous for Cats and Dogs even if they are provided blankets or mediums such as hay or shavings. They need to be brought in doors or into the garage at the very least. At these temps it can take less than 30min for a cold weather injury like frost bite to occur.

PREPERATION: Anyone with outside pets should make sure to bring those pets inside by at least 10:00PM. When Temperatures dip into the low 20s there is no reason for any pet to remain outside and even with things such as hay or shavings will not give you pet the protection from the cold at these temperatures, remember if you are cold with your jacket on your pets are cold as well. The only time it is suitable for a pet to remain outside during these cold temps is if they have a heated doghouse or a pet warming pad that provides warm heat. When temps drop below freezing, it becomes dangerous for your pets to be exposed for long periods. During a freeze your pets can develop frost bite on their paw pads. A simple doghouse is not considered an adequate shelter when temperatures are at or below zero.

Adding plenty of hay will help your pet stay warm. If temps drop below 30°F, even a shelter with hay is not sufficient and pets should be crated inside or inside a garage. Temps are not expected to drop this low, but it is important to remember. If you absolutely cannot bring in your pet, you can purchase very effective pet heating pads made especially for dog and cat houses that are well designed, waterproof and chew proof. These pads come in a pack of two. The pads have a 12hr timer on them and can be set to 141°F. That will keep your cat or dog nice and warm during cold weather. It is important to set the temperature to 141°F when the temps reach freezing. For your convenience, we have included an amazon link below for the two pack pet warming pads that we recommend and use in our cat houses here at the weather center for community strays to have a safe warm spot to get out of the cold.

Good Evening Everyone, Timothy Hayes coming to you from The Northeast Georgia Weather Center In downtown . I hope everyone has enjoyed these very nice temperatures this week! I mean who would of thought we would be wearing shorts to Christmas dinner🥵 We topped out at 81°F here at the weather center yesterday and while we only hit 61°F today it was still warm with 90% humidity it felt like a late Summer day! But, buckle up because winter is coming and will be making a return tomorrow night with a vengeance! Tomorrow will start off with cloudy skies and a few off and on showers during your morning commute. Temps across Northeast GA will hover around the low to mid 60s in most places but as we move into the overnight hours temperatures are going to take a deep dive all the way down to the low to mid 20s! That is a major temperature swing with some areas seeing a 20-25° temperature difference.

Tuesday's daytime temps we be a bit milder with temps in the mid to upper 40s across the region but as we move into the evening hours we will once again see temperatures drop back down into the mid to upper 20s. We anticipate issuing a Severe Cold Pet-ALERT for all of Northeast GA for Monday and Tuesday Night so keep an eye out for those. We want to make sure we are taking care of our fur babies and getting them in out of the cold! We will have an all new updated 10-Day forecast for you tomorrow including a look at your New-Years Eve forecast! Here is a hint "Sunny Skies and Comfortable Temps"

As you kick off your morning commute in the morning expect rain showers and temps in the low to mid 50s. Make sure you leave a little early and drive safe incase of delays due to accidents. We all know that a lot of folks forget how to drive when it rains so make sure to slow down and allow yourself a little extra time in the morning. Tomorrow is going to be a very pleasant day but once the Sun goes down so does the temperatures! That is all I have for now! Good Afternoon everyone, Timothy Hayes here with you manning the weather desk here at The Northeast Georgia Weather Center in beautiful . I hope that your weekend is off to an awesome start today! I know many of you are spending the weekend recovering from the Holidays and man is it a beautiful one outside. The temperature just topped out at 80°F here at the weather center in beautiful Commerce, GA and it is going to remain warm for the rest of the day. Across the Northeast GA Region temps will be nice and pleasant ranging from the mid to upper 70s and that will be the story throughout Sunday as well with temps in the Mid to upper 60s across Northeast GA. We will start the first part of next week off warm but winter makes a big comeback over night on Tuesday where temperatures across the region will dip way down to the mid 20s over night with even lower temps in the higher elevations.

The later part of next week will see mild and pleasant temps from the mid 50s to mid 60s across the region with night time lows in the low to mid 30s. We do have about a 20-30% Chance of rain Sunday evening into Monday morning but our next best chance for rain will be Next weekend. So, enjoy this beautiful weekend before we start trending back to average temps for this time of year. Before I go, I have been getting tons of questions from you guys about when we could see some snow! Well, we will not be seeing any more snow this year, but I have a gut feeling that we will see some decent snow around mid to late January. That is just based off my gut feeling and is not backed up by science or data..lol but I think we will deff get some decent snow fall this winter and we will see record braking cold temps. The way the weather patterns have been lately I don't think we will have to wait to much longer on seeing some white stuff. I can't wait to get some snow. My husband makes amazing snow cream. I even bought him a special tarp that allows him to collect clean snow. I will share his recipe ahead of any potential snow fall =)

Well that is it for me for now! I am going to spend the rest of the afternoon working in the weather center. We are installing some new displays today and have a brand new set up at the weather desk that is going to make live streaming so much easier. I have attached below the newest short range and long range Temperature and precipitation outlooks. Make it a great day everyone!

Please Note: This is a Regional Forecast for Northeast GA. Temperatures may vary a few degrees +/- depending on your exact elevation and proximity to the Blue Ridge mountains.

FORECAST DISCUSSION

We are entering a complex and festive 10-day period characterized by a transition from a strong Pacific-originating ridge to a more active southern stream jet pattern. As we move toward the Christmas holiday, a high-pressure system currently anchored over the Ohio Valley will slide eastward, allowing for return flow from the Gulf of Mexico. This will transition our current cool, dry air mass into a much milder and moisture-rich environment by mid-week.

The primary meteorological driver for the Christmas period will be a shortwave trough lifting out of the Southern Plains. This feature will introduce isentropic lift over the region, leading to widespread cloud cover and light rain chances for the holiday. Following Christmas, we expect a brief period of subsidence (sinking air) as a weak ridge builds in, providing a window of dry weather before a more significant cold front approaches for New Year's Eve. We are also monitoring a block in the upper atmospheric flow near Greenland—the Negative North Atlantic Oscillation (-NAO)—which could slow down these systems and keep us in a damp, "wedge-like" pattern (CAD) for the latter half of the week.

DETAILED FORECAST
__________________________________________________
Monday Dec 22nd, 2025

High: 52°F / Low: 32°F
Rain Chance: 0%
Expected Conditions: Sunny ☀️

Discussion: A classic post-frontal day. High pressure is centered to our northwest, filtering in dry, continental air. Radiational cooling tonight will be efficient, leading to a light freeze for most of the region.
__________________________________________________
Tuesday Dec 23rd, 2025

High: 55°F / Low: 35°F
Rain Chance: 5%
Expected Conditions: Mostly Sunny 🌤️

Discussion: The high-pressure system begins its slide toward the Atlantic coast. Winds will begin to shift from North to Northeast. This is a quiet "travel day" across Georgia with no significant weather hazards.
__________________________________________________
Wednesday Dec 24th, 2025 (Christmas Eve)

High: 58°F / Low: 44°F
Rain Chance: 20%
Expected Conditions: Increasing Clouds ☁️

Discussion: Moisture advection increases as a low-level jet begins to pull air from the Gulf. This will cause mid-to-high level clouds to thicken by sunset. A stray shower is possible after midnight as the atmosphere saturates.
__________________________________________________
Thursday Dec 25th, 2025 (Christmas Day)

High: 62°F / Low: 50°F
Rain Chance: 40%
Expected Conditions: Cloudy w/ Showers 🌦️

Discussion: See the special "Christmas Forecast" section below for hour-by-hour details. The region will be under a mild, damp flow.
__________________________________________________
Friday Dec 26th, 2025

High: 60°F / Low: 42°F
Rain Chance: 30%
Expected Conditions: AM Rain / PM Clearing 🌥️

Discussion: The weak shortwave passes to our east by noon. Behind it, a weak surface boundary will clear out the low-level moisture, leading to a brighter afternoon but cooler evening.
__________________________________________________
Saturday Dec 27th, 2025

High: 54°F / Low: 34°F
Rain Chance: 0%
Expected Conditions: Fair & Cool 😌

Discussion: Surface high pressure builds in from the Great Lakes. This is a dry air mass with lower dewpoints, making it feel crisp and seasonal.
__________________________________________________
Sunday Dec 28th, 2025

High: 52°F / Low: 36°F
Rain Chance: 10%
Expected Conditions: Partly Cloudy ⛅

Discussion: Clouds begin to stream in from the west again as the upper-level flow becomes more zonal. No major rain chances, but the sun may be filtered at times.
__________________________________________________
Monday Dec 29th, 2025

High: 57°F / Low: 40°F
Rain Chance: 20%
Expected Conditions: Mostly Cloudy ☁️

Discussion: A warm front starts to lift northward from the Gulf Coast. This overrunning pattern will keep skies gray, and a few light showers or drizzle patches are possible, especially in the mountains.
__________________________________________________
Tuesday Dec 30th, 2025

High: 61°F / Low: 48°F
Rain Chance: 60%
Expected Conditions: Widespread Rain 🌧️

Discussion: A stronger storm system develops in the Mississippi Valley. Strong synoptic-scale forcing will bring a period of moderate to heavy rain to Northeast Georgia. Instability is low, so thunder is unlikely, but it will be a "soaker."
__________________________________________________
Wednesday Dec 31st, 2025 (New Year's Eve)

High: 55°F / Low: 38°F
Rain Chance: 40%
Expected Conditions: Breezy & Cooler 🌬️

Discussion: See the "New Year's Eve" section for more details. A cold front will be sweeping through during the day.
__________________________________________________
CHRISTMAS FORECAST 🎄
__________________________________________________
A mild but damp Christmas is in store for Northeast Georgia. While we won't see a "White Christmas," it will be comfortable for travel between family gatherings, though you'll want the umbrella handy!

Hour-by-Hour (Dec 25th):

8:00 AM: 50°F - Overcast, patchy fog. 🌫️

10:00 AM: 53°F - Cloudy, 20% chance of a light shower. ☁️

12:00 PM: 57°F - Occasional light rain, mild. 🌦️

2:00 PM: 60°F - Cloudy skies, showers likely. 🌧️

4:00 PM: 62°F - High for the day, persistent light rain. 🌦️

6:00 PM: 59°F - Rain tapering to drizzle. ☁️

8:00 PM: 56°F- Mostly cloudy and damp. 🌬️

Discussion: The holiday is dominated by Isentropic Lift (warm air riding over cooler air at the surface). This creates a persistent cloud deck and periods of light, "misting" rain rather than heavy downpours.
__________________________________________________
NEW YEAR'S EVE FORECAST 🎆
__________________________________________________
Wednesday, December 31st, 2025
As we ring in 2026, the weather will be turning significantly colder. A strong cold front will move through the region during the early afternoon hours.

During the Day: Highs will reach the mid-50s early, but temperatures will begin falling by 3 PM. Expect breezy conditions with scattered showers.

Midnight Celebration: By the time the clock strikes midnight, temperatures in Commerce and Gainesville will likely be in the lower 40s, with wind chills in the 30s. Rain should be exiting the region to the east, leaving behind a cold, clearing sky for the first morning of the new year. 🎇
__________________________________________________
SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK ⚡
__________________________________________________
Severe Weather Outlook Discussion

For the period of Dec 22nd through Dec 31st, the overall severe weather threat remains Very Low. The primary systems moving through (on Christmas and Dec 30th) lack the instability (CAPE) and strong surface-based lift required for tornadic activity or large hail. The Dec 30th system will have strong wind shear, but the cold, stable air at the surface should prevent these winds from mixing down to the ground.
__________________________________________________
WINTER WEATHER OUTLOOK ❄️
__________________________________________________
5-Day Outlook (Dec 22-26)

There is zero chance of winter precipitation for Northeast Georgia during the first five days of this forecast. While it will be cold enough on Monday and Tuesday night, there is no moisture present. Conversely, when the moisture arrives for Christmas, the entire atmospheric column will be well above freezing.

Long-Range Outlook & Polar Vortex Discussion

Looking toward the end of December and into January, long-range ensemble models (GFS/ECMWF) are showing a neutral Arctic Oscillation (AO). We do NOT see any immediate signs of a major Polar Vortex disruption that would bring sub-zero temperatures to Georgia in the next 10-14 days.

However, long-range data hints at a potential "pattern flip" around January 5th-10th. Some models are suggesting a Gulf Low development during that window. If the cold air behind our New Year's system lingers, there could be a narrow window for "wintry mischief" in the higher elevations of Union, Towns, and Rabun counties (specifically near Blairsville and Clayton).

Disclaimer: This is a simple discussion of long-range possibilities. At this time, no snow is forecast for the region. These models are subject to significant change and are currently too far out for accurate predictions.
__________________________________________________
FINAL THOUGHTS
__________________________________________________
The final days of 2025 will be active but generally mild for Northeast Georgia. A chilly start this Monday gives way to a damp, mild Christmas. We then see another soaking rain event just before New Year's Eve, followed by a sharp cool-down for the holiday festivities. Please drive carefully if traveling on Christmas Day, as roads will be slick from the persistent light rain.

Good Morning my fellow insomniacs. Hayes here with you this morning. I am day two with very little sleep! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Mine started off with a bang when we had a bad leak under the kitchen sink that gave us a great little indoor water feature. One of my cats was setting in a piece of Tupperware floating their like a titanic survivor. It was 3am and I was irritable. I was already having a hard time sleeping due to a new medication and once the crisis was obverted and the mess cleaned up with the Shop-Vac I was unable to fall asleep and I got maybe 45min last night so I will not be that active today and will be back at it tomorrow. I am going to take a hot shower and take some melatonin and try and get atleast some sleep before I have to get some shopping done. I think I am not going to have any trouble catching a few zzs finally as I am totally exhausted. I will have a full breakdown of your Northeast GA Christmas Forecast later today along with an all new 10-day forecast for Both The Northeast Georgia Weather Center and our New Upstate SC Network Palmetto State Weather Network-UPSTATE South Carolina HMWNetwork Affiliate. I just wanted to let everyone know the forecast will be late today. As you know I typically try and get them out by noon. I should have the forecast out and updated on the website around 5pm-6pm at the very latest. So, bear with me today and why your at it help me count some sheep! Make it a great day everyone I hope each of you have a fantastic day!

SUBJECT: The Northeast GA Weather Center has issued an Extreme Cold Pet-ALERT for all Northeast Georgia Counties that goes into effect this evening beginning at 9:00PM-ET until 09:00AM-ET on 12/16/25.

DISCUSSION: As we move into the evening hours, our mild afternoon temps will begin to drop as cold air begins to dominate the Northeast GA Region, bringing temperatures down to or below freezing during the early morning hours.

PREPERATION: Anyone with outside pets should make sure to bring those pets inside by at least 9:00PM If your pet must stay outside, please ensure they have a way to stay warm. Remember if you are cold with your jacket on your pets are cold as well. For your convince, we have included an amazon link below for the two pack pet warming pads that we recommend and use in our cat houses here at the weather center for community strays to have a safe warm spot to get out of the cold.
