HEAT ADVISORY – OUTDOOR WORK SAFETY
Effective: August 12–16, 2026
Applies To: All Elk Maintenance Contracting employees and contractors performing outdoor work
⚠️ HEAT ADVISORY
Hot and humid conditions are expected throughout this week. Employees performing outdoor work, equipment operation, mechanical work, lawn care, hauling, or other physically demanding activities may be at increased risk for heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses.
Required Safety Precautions
- Drink water frequently throughout the workday. Do not wait until you are thirsty.
- Take regular breaks in a shaded, cool, or air-conditioned area.
- Whenever possible, schedule heavy or strenuous work during the cooler morning hours.
- Wear lightweight, breathable, light-colored clothing when practical.
- Use appropriate sun protection, including hats and sunscreen.
- Monitor yourself and your coworkers for signs of heat-related illness.
- Employees should immediately report dizziness, weakness, nausea, headache, confusion, excessive sweating, or other symptoms.
- Do not continue working if you feel you are becoming overheated.
- Supervisors should monitor employees working in direct sunlight or performing strenuous activities.
- Make sure vehicles and equipment have adequate drinking water available before beginning work.
- Use extra caution when working around hot machinery, engines, pavement, or other heat-producing equipment.
🚨 WATCH FOR HEAT ILLNESS
Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, and cool or clammy skin.
Heat Stroke – EMERGENCY: Confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures, very high body temperature, or inability to respond normally.
If heat stroke is suspected, stop work and call 911 immediately. Move the person to a cool area and begin cooling them while emergency assistance is being obtained.
Supervisor Responsibility
Supervisors are responsible for evaluating working conditions throughout the day and adjusting work activities, breaks, and schedules when necessary to protect employees from excessive heat exposure.
No job is more important than the safety of our employees.
Please take the heat seriously, stay hydrated, look out for your coworkers, and speak up if conditions become unsafe.
