LONG-ISH post...

"Danese, how can I help support young photographers of color?" I'm so glad you asked! This is your moment. The 2024 auction is now live, offering you the chance to view and purchase stunning photographs. The funds raised from this annual event provide scholarships and visual programming during NABJ. We are committed to building upon the strong legacy of Black visual journalists who uphold the highest standards of quality journalism through workshops and networking opportunities.

There are 25 photographs that you can bid on right now digitally. Additionally, there are 10 photographs that you can bid on in person at the NABJ Convention. If there is a photo you like and you are not here, phone a friend who is, give them a spending limit, and have them bid for you!

If you don't have the money to purchase an image, you can share this post and information on your social media channels to help spread the word.

A special thanks to Meaghan Looram, Director of Photography at The New York Times, Becky Lebowitz, Assistant Editor and Chief of Photographers at The New York Times, Bedel Saget, Graphic/Multimedia Editor at The New York Times, the Associated Press, and NABJ Founder Allison Davis.

ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, CAPTURE! 📸 🤳 📹

The 24-hour NABJ Moneta Sleet Jr. photo competition, sponsored by The Associated Press, ProPublica and Sony, has begun.

The theme for this years' competition is, Chicago: A Resilient Community. Submitted images should celebrate narratives of strength and perseverance within the Black community of Chicago.

All convention attendees with a camera can participate. Our continued sponsor, Sony, will be providing cameras and lenses. Participants have until Friday, August 2 @ 12pm to capture their images. Submissions are due August 2 by 4PM CST. Visit the VTF Suite (Grant Park Parlor, floor 24) to receive the submission form.

No camera is off limits! A cell phone camera can be used so long as the photo is taken in the 24-hour timeframe, the theme is recognized in the work and the captions are informative, proving the photographer went out of their comfort zone and explored the community around them.

Make sure your submission has a caption that explains the who, what, when, where, why. And, if needed, your interpretation of the theme.

You can have up to 5 submissions.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of professional visual storytellers.

We'd like to thank The Associated Press, ProPublica and Sony for sponsoring the photo competition.

Good luck!
