On August 1, 1192 outside Jaffa, Richard the Lionheart led one of the most audacious beach landings in history.

Arriving by sea to find the city breached and defenders driven to the citadel, Richard refused to wait for his cavalry transports. Shouting "God have mercy on us, we will die with our brothers," he leaped into the waves with eighty knights and Genoese crossbowmen, driving the besieging force off the sand and reclaiming the fortress in twenty minutes.

In 305 BC under the night sky of Rhodes, harbor blacksmiths completed an engineering lock that kept an imperial armada outside the walls.

Using geared windlasses mounted within stone towers, they raised a colossal chain of hand-forged iron links dripping with seawater, barring the entrance to the inner port. Paired with fields of sharp iron caltrops sown across the shallow sandbars, this perimeter denied entry to both night raiders and underwater sappers, saving Rhodes from maritime assault.

On April 5, 1242 on the frozen surface of Lake Peipus, Prince Alexander Nevsky turned common winter transport into an impenetrable bastion.

Lashing heavy stone-laden sledges together across the shoreline, his foot militia created a defensive barrier where horsemen could not break through. When the Teutonic armored wedge struck the barrier, their charge stalled on the slippery surface, allowing flankers to encircle the formation on the groaning spring ice.

FOUNDATION VAULTS UNDERMINED BY FIRE. CRACKING DOWN THE MIDDLE. THE FINAL STRONGHOLD COLLAPSES.

On May 28, 1291 at Acre, the last fortress of the Crusaders in the Holy Land came crashing down in thunderous ruin.

With the city fallen, the surviving Knights Templar held out inside their seaside citadel. Mamluk sappers undermined the corner foundations, but the knights refused to yield. When the supports gave way, the entire multi-ton stone tower collapsed inward, burying both defenders and attackers in an immortal last stand that ended two centuries of Crusader rule.

In 200 BC at the Euripus Strait of Chalcis, Roman raiders pulled off a masterclass in night navigation and tidal warfare.
