If you’ve lived in Shelby County over the last eight years, you’ve seen what happens when one party has total control of local government.
Mayor Lee Harris has overseen county government while taxpayers have watched spending increase and many services continue to decline. Sheriff Floyd Bonner served as the county’s top law enforcement officer during a period when crime became such a serious concern that federal intervention was needed through the Memphis Safe Task Force. Under the leadership of Harris and Bonner, the Shelby County Jail has also fallen into such poor condition that many now question whether it can be salvaged.
Need to renew your tags? Under Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert, residents have faced long delays and frustration just to receive basic services.
General Sessions Court Clerk Tamara “Tami” Sawyer was indicted on charges alleging the misuse of more than $40,000 in taxpayer funds and continues to serve in office while those charges are pending.
Then there’s the Memphis-Shelby County Schools Board, which has become a symbol of dysfunction and controversy while too many students continue to struggle academically and reading proficiency remains a major concern.
And let’s not forget Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy, whose critics argue has embraced policies that are too lenient on repeat and violent offenders.
None of this happened overnight. It happened because too many people stayed home and ignored local elections.
Your sheriff, mayor, district attorney, county officials, school board members, and clerks have a direct impact on your daily life. If you want things to change in Shelby County, you have to show up and vote.
