Don’t get us wrong.

☀️ It is 92 degrees right now in Colorado Springs where we live. On our lunchtime stroll I had to walk through the sprinklers just to cool down.

⛰️BUT one of the best things about living here is whenever you need to cool down, you can head up to the mountains. One of our favorite escapes is going to Idaho Springs (45 minutes from Denver) and hiking up St. Mary’s Glacier.

🌅 We started out before sunrise sporting our puffy jackets. By the time we hiked up the glacier, we were starting to peel off the layers. Once we were at the tippy top above the glacier, a storm rolled in, and the weather cooled down quite a bit, so we had to put the layers back on. Typical schizophrenic Colorado weather, as Brandon would say.

🧺 If you don’t wanna hike up past the glacier, no probs. Staying put at the base of the glacier is still absolutely beautiful. Pack a picnic lunch and hang out by the lake. It’s THE perfect day. Best part of all is we got there around sunrise and there are only a few other people there. We had it to ourselves for hours.

👉 Tell us, where in the world are you right now, and is it super hot?

🚗 Parking is pricey. Trail head parking is $20 per vehicle, per calendar day. There is a restroom in the paid lot.

📍St. Mary’s Glacier, Arapaho National Forest
🌎 Colorado, near Idaho Springs

🗻 To get to the base of the glacier, take the 1.5 mile trail (moderate). It’s super rocky and uneven, so we recommend hiking shoes.

🥾 The trail begins at 10,428 feet in elevation with a short gain to 10,848 feet at the base of the glacier

🙌 Head to the top, and you’ll be at 11,236 feet.

🐶 Doggos are welcome if they are on a leash.

🌲 We stayed nearby an evergreen at Juniper Lodge. More on that soon! It’s Colorado’s first treehouse lodge. And it is incredible.

🍳 First, a meal at The Ragged Point Restaurant.

🚶‍♀️Then walk over to the artwork installation.

😍 You will see the staircase just in front of the Adirondack chairs

👀 After the first set upstairs, it does start to get steep and very narrow. so only continue if you feel comfortable.

🙌 Afterward, stay the night at the inn
or continue along Highway 1.

Big Sur must-see spots ⬇️

🚗 My first memories of the Pacific Coast Highway are from a family road trip in the early 80s. From our Bay area home we loaded up the yellow caravan and made our way to Big Sur. As a youngster I had no clue that this was considered the best scenic drive in California.

Now, several decades later, I am cruising down those same winding roads, but for a very different type of trip, in a very different type of vehicle. My mode of transportation this time: a Sprinter van rented through Outdoorsy with my husband at my side.

For the past three years, the Big Sur section of the highway was closed due to landslides. Now that this legendary stretch is back in business, here is your van-friendly Big Sur coastal drive itinerary. Here are the best stops along Highway 1.

Spring is our favorite time to visit because California is at its greenest. You get the unbeatable combination of warm weather, wildflowers and flowing waterfalls. Fall is next in line with warm, sunny days and less coastal fog.

👀 Pro tip
Campsites tend to book up six months ahead of time, even during the winter months. If you aren’t able to plan that far ahead, try Campnab, a website that alerts you to cancellations at sold-out campsites; it’s a total game changer. You’ll also want a Harvest Hosts membership that allows you to book an unlimited number of RV campsites with no camping fees.

When you come from a family of do it yourselfers, you spend a heck of a lot of time at The Home Depot

⚽️So when The Home Depot invited us to the FIFA World Cup game in Atlanta, Brandon and I jumped at the chance.

🧰Not only did we cross off a bucket-list item by going to the game, but we also had the chance to test out THE coolest new home-improvement products.

🪚We had a field day chainsawing logs, drilling through concrete, test driving an electric mower, and more.

We’ll preview some of our faves in Stories this week, so stay tuned.
