Genth Swine Genetics

Genth Swine Genetics Luke Genth here! We currently are raising Berkshires, Polands, Spots, and Herefords!

We are a small family farm that has a focus on raising functional pigs that can be shown at fairs, but also produce in the crate and the butcher shop.

We ended our farrowing season with a litter of Berks. It didn’t turn out how we would have hoped. Only 2 piglets out of 4 lived. We aren’t sure what has led to such a small litter, our litter size on that line has always been 10. Sometimes things don’t go as we would have hoped but we are thankful that mom and the two littles are all doing well. We will probably breed her back for a summer litter and see if it was just a fluke or what we have going on all of sudden in our Berks.

Queso, the Hereford sow lays down and does it again! Our only sow on the farm and man does she do a great job of laying down and pushing them out. A trait that we desire to keep around.

Our only sow on the farm “Queso” is in the crate! I put her in a day earlier than normal just because I had one open and it’s going to be cold! This will be her third litter on the farm and we can’t wait to see these hereford piglets!

The spots have finally arrived! No issues with this litter.

We are heart broken to say that we lost our first sow today. Our poor Poland just wasn’t able to recover from the trauma she experienced giving birth to her first litter from some complications that arose. We really thought she was going to pull through this but now her legacy will live on with her off spring. This is a tough part of raising livestock, but unfortunately it happens. Our kids will be even stronger now after experiencing this type of loss. It’s never easy to lose an animal, I grew up with pigs, it didn’t happen often to us, but since being an adult and raising pigs on our own as a family this is our first loss of this magnitude.

On a more positive note, the kids are loving having some baby pigs in the house for a couple days while we monitor their health to make sure they pull through without their mom. We also have a litter of spots due any day!

The Poland’s have hit the ground! They started coming ar 9:30am on 12/1. It was our toughest farrowing litter to date. It didn’t go at all as we would have hoped, but God is good and we have 5 healthy babies. Momma ran into some issues during the delivery. We still aren’t 100% sure what went wrong if only we could see inside of her to know what we could have done better to help her delivery these babies. We are praying that Daisy makes a full recovery and is able to continue to raise this litter. We learned a lot through this litter and had some amazing input from our fellow pig breeders that we reached out to. My 10 year old daughter even got to go inside her and try to help deliver the babies. We hate having to pull any pigs, but at the same time I’m glad she got to experience that since being a Vet is high on her list of future careers. Praying the remaining litters go a smoother for the mommas!

Daisy the Poland is locked and loaded. Can’t wait to see these babies sometime after 12/1! We load them in a few days early to let them get adjusted and to transition them over to a lactation feed to help with looser stools and more milk production!

Added some wheels to our farrowing crate #2. We have farrowing crate #1 that came with wheels and it is a very handy feature to have. So we added some to the second crate! Got it done just in time for them to used hard for farrowing season! Less than 30 days till we should be seeing some baby pigs. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to grow and improve our program!
