David Webber, COLUMBIAN MISSOURIAN, August 1, 2025 Books are wonderful. The U.S. Armed Services realized that in the 1940s. Books inform, entertain, distract and foster community. Molly Gupta Manning‘s “When Books Went to War: The Stories that Helped Us Win World War II” published in 2014 describes the efforts by citizens, the publishing industry and the military to provide books to the armed services personnel engaged in training and war in Europe and the South Pacific....

For a moment, specifically on May 12, when he had a New York Times opinion essay titled “Don’t cut Medicaid,” I had hopes that Missouri Sen....

David Webber, COLUMBIA MISSOURIAN, June 29, 2025 I don’t read much fiction, but a friend loaned me his copy of “James,” the 2025 Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Percival Everett. I am grateful he did. I had seen media stories about “James” winning a lot of awards and noticed a guy carrying a copy of the book at the public library so I decided to take a look....

David Webber, Columbia Missourian, May 2, 2025 With President Donald Trump’s shake-up of the economy and governmental institutions, it will be necessary for future administration and government officials at all levels to redesign programs to protect those who need them. We do not have a comprehensive word to describe accurately the portion of the American population deserving special attention. “Homelessness” or “unsheltered” does not always get at the root cause of the subpopulation requiring help....
