Compared to its upscale siblings this USA-made 2018 Gibson Les Paul Tribute lacks the pricey appointments (body & neck binding, a period correct goldtop finish, etc.). It's also one of the best-sounding, gigable, guitars I own...and I totally dig the working-class vibe

Yonder Barn Demos - '54 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop Pt 2

Pt 2 of 2 of the Yonder Barn Studio demo of the '54 Les Paul Goldtop with less talk and more racket!

The amp is my 50 watt Marshall 2266 Vintage Modern. Featured on the pedalboard are the Dunlop Cry Baby Mini Wah, Xotic SP Compressor, Blackstar HT Dual overdrive, TC Electronic Flashback II Delay, and Keeley 30ms Double Tracker.

Yonder Barn Demos - 2018 Les Paul Tribute Goldtop & Marshall 2266 Vintage Modern

Now that the Covid-19 pandemic has reduced us to inmates in our own homes, there's plenty of time for diversion. I've owned this 2018 Gibson Les Paul Tribute "Goldtop" for several months and have been meaning to get it dialed in on my gigging amp, a 50-watt Marshall Vintage Modern and pedal board. Even though it's the lowest priced USA-made Les Paul and lacks the cosmetic appointments of it's upscale cousins, it's 100% Les Paul...and with a thin satin finish and PLEK'd fretboard, may sound even better.

Now that the Covid-19 pandemic has reduced us to inmates in our own homes, there's plenty of time for diversion. I've owned this 2018 Gibson Les Paul Tribute...

My54Goldtop

Sometimes things in the studio get needlessly complex...I'll start overthinking and my setup begins to look like a Rube Goldberg machine. At those time's it's helpful to revisit some of my old setups like this and remember that sometimes less really is more. This video was shot on a old iPad (II?) out in the pole barn before it became Yonder Barn Studio.

Accompanying me is perhaps the world's loudest cricket. I will admit however that, for a cricket, he has excellent tone...again less is more.

This is a 6-minute tour of the soundtrack of my youth without the endless yammering about gear, settings, etc. and pointless wanking from the 2-hours I originally recorded a couple of weeks ago. My original intent was to do a quick demo of this amp to show off its classic rock bonifieds (Zepp, AC-DC, Clapton, Van Halen, ZZ Top, etc.) to sell it on Ebay or Reverb.com.

In this clip, I'm using a 2013 John Suhr Standard Pro, Xotic SP compressor, Blackstar HT Dual (overdrive/distortion), TC Electronics Flashback delay, and Robert Keeley 30ms Double Tracker into the clean channel of a cranked Marshall 2266 Vintage Modern.

...and yeah, about the whole selling thing...turns out I'm keeping it. I might even be shopping for another one for a backup. Don't tell Peggy!!

Audio Liner Notes

Last year, news of "The Swamp Fox" Tony Joe White's death influenced the song, "Nobody Gets Out of this World Alive".

These are just audio notes...1-take "stream of consciousness" on what was on my mind at the time. Hopefully someday I'll get around to actually releasing the song.

This Marshall 2266 Vintage Modern (2007-2013) is based on the 1662 JTM 45 (which was based on the late 50's Fender Bassman circuit) Clapton made legendary on the John Mayall Bluesbreakers album. Although it claims to be 50 watts, it feels about half that...unlike most Marshall heads, you can really crank this amp without getting stupid-loud

To replicate the authentic early Clapton tone, I use the Les Paul, dime the master volume and slam the clean channel with an overdrive & compression pedal. This oversize Avatar 2x12 'Bluesbreaker' cabinet really completes that phat 'Beano' vibe.
