In 1948, Puerto Rico passed Law 53 — the Gag Law. But long before that, the U.S. colonial government had spent decades trying to force English into our classrooms, our courts, and every part of daily life. 🇵🇷

They wanted Spanish to disappear. They wanted Puerto Rican children to become strangers to the language of their grandmothers. Teachers were ordered to teach in English. Students were punished for speaking the language they knew best. The mission was clear: take the tongue, weaken the people.

It failed. Our poets kept writing in Spanish. Our musicians kept singing in Spanish. Our abuelas kept praying in Spanish. Our language was never only a way to communicate — it was resistance. If you still carry even one Spanish word in your heart, that is not coincidence. That is survival. Drop a 🇵🇷 if your language was handed down to you like something sacred, because it was.
