IN GRATITUDE,
We have raised enough for six horses so far. I don’t really know any other rescue that has supporters so generous, coming together to rescue nameless horses off a photo like you guys always do.
I just know the horses (and all of us at CCR) are really grateful.
Some people would see this picture and only see a senior Percheron past his or her time.
The gunky eyes with their milky lenses, the fuzzy ears a little shaggy and bent from their years on this earth like a wizened tree, and the thick curling coat I know is soft as any teddy bear.
She was passed over at the sale because she was too old with bent and gnarled arthritic knees. Too old to pull, too young to die on her own, and too unlucky to end up with a decent retirement — so here she stands in the slaughter holding facility.
One of the few remaining in the entire country.
And you and I, we’ve got a chance to save her.
Maybe I don’t think it’s so crazy to try and save them one horse at a time because when this fundraiser hits $4500– she’s walking free to quarantine. Her way is paid for six months. She can rest, relax and enjoy respite.
Then maybe she finds her forever home walking down trails with another old soul, legs dangling over her thick shaggy coat while bare feet kick happily in the looming sunlight. Hands buried in a mane thick enough to thatch a roof with, and a cheerful whistle of two happy souls echoing with the thumping shuffle of an old horse walking.
And when her time comes, hopefully many happy years from now, one soul with make the hardest choice to say goodbye. The tears that follow nothing more than the overwhelming beauty of love that is too great to contain— so we must release some of it, as otherwise we will simply combust from the richness.
I want that future for her.
If she stays here unrescued, her future will be the roar of a cold aluminum truck ride to Canada, where a pistol will fire directly at her skull and if she’s lucky she’ll fall down in the tacky blood of countless horses slaughtered in cold blood in front of her.
If she’s lucky, she’ll die instantly and if she’s not, she’ll still be alive when they push a hook into her and lift her, swinging, up as they render her for every inch of her meat.
It’s not the death she deserves after twenty years of service.
And we want to change that for her.
It’s up to you. $1 given from each of our followers changes her fate and every single other horse inside. People scoff and say $1 can’t change things but it can change everything.
It will change everything for this horse.
If you can spare just $1 and share this post, we can save her life and change her future.
We can do a good thing, together.
