From her early education to facing the toughest challenges as mayor, Maggard’s story is one of adaptability, community focus, and hope for the next chapter. Her career trajectory is a testament to the non-linear nature of many successful public servants. That journey into politics wasn’t marked by grand ambitions but rather by grassroots engagement. 🍷 From barn church to fine dining: the story of The Refectory

In 1842, families living on the rural northwest side of Columbus gathered in a barn to worship. After many years at a second location, they moved into this complex on what is now Bethel Road, where they worshipped for decades.

In 1971, it was time to move again. The property was sold to restauranters, and reborn as “The Olde Church-House” restaurant. Originally, the church itself went unused. The schoolhouse was used as the restaurant, and the connecting structure was used as the kitchen.

In 1981, it became The Refectory, which expanded into the former church itself. Today, the schoolhouse serves as a lounge dining area with a sit-down bar, while the west wing is the restaurant’s main dining room.

Current owner Kamal Boulos came to the restaurant after moving to Columbus in 1976. Working his way from server to General Manager, he came into ownership in 1991. Under his leadership, The Refectory has become one of Columbus’ most acclaimed restaurants, even earning Wine Spectator’s Grand Award for its 17,000-bottle wine cellar – the only restaurant in Ohio to receive this distinction.
