He carried an EMPTY briefcase to work.

Before Virgil Miller became President of Aflac Incorporated and Aflac U.S., he was working the phones in the call center.

But here’s what got me: he was already dressing for where he wanted to go.

Virgil wore a suit and tie when he didn’t have to. He carried a briefcase even though there was nothing in it. People laughed at him.

But he had a vision.

He studied what the people at the next level looked like, how they carried themselves, and what it would take to get there. Then he started preparing BEFORE he ever had the position.

That made me think about something Michael Bernard Beckwith has taught about the power of asking “What if?”

What if you become the president?
What if you build the business?
What if you get the opportunity you’ve been praying for?
What if the thing you keep seeing in your head actually happens?

Virgil’s story is a reminder: Don’t wait until you arrive to start preparing for where you’re going.

That was so good I had to ask Virgil Miller to say it again.

As President of Aflac Incorporated and Aflac U.S., Virgil has learned that leadership isn’t measured only by what YOU can accomplish.

It’s measured by what you can bring out of the people you lead.

Know your strengths. Lean into them. Build around them. Then use those strengths to help other people become successful.

Because when the people around you win, the team wins, the business wins, and ultimately, you win.

That’s leadership.

Virgil Miller didn’t start at the top of Aflac. He worked his way there.

He started in Aflac’s call center and made a decision early on that he wasn’t going to stay where he started. He kept learning. He kept preparing. He kept taking the next opportunity seriously.

Today, Virgil R. Miller serves as President of Aflac U.S. and became the first African American President of Aflac Incorporated.

And his advice in this conversation is simple: prepare yourself for where you want to go.

If the next position requires a degree, go get the degree. If you need to take a class, take the class. If there’s something you need to learn, learn it.

Don’t just pray for the opportunity. Prepare for it.

Overthinking will have you preparing for everything that could go wrong. But faith asks a different question:

What if God is already working it out before you even get there?

Before you touch it. Before you hear about it. Before you know you’ll need Him there.

Maybe the next time your mind starts racing, don’t ask, “What if everything goes wrong?”

Ask, “What if God is already ahead of me?” 🙏🏽

Dr. Bob Wright has spent decades in business, and his message was simple: everybody should experience what it means to bet on themselves.

Going into business takes sacrifice. You’re betting on your ability, your vision, and your willingness to build something that can provide for you and your family.

Sitting down with Dr. Bob Wright reminded me that success isn’t only measured by titles or accomplishments. It’s measured by your character, your integrity, and how you treat people when no one is watching.
