Ohio Courthouses: Seats of Justice - Scioto County

The Scioto County Courthouse, built in 1927, stands as a historic landmark in Portsmouth, Ohio, reflecting the region’s rich history and resilience, particularly through events like the devastating 1937 flood. Inside, the courthouse showcases murals by Cincinnati artist Hermann Wessel, depicting key moments in local and national history, such as the French general Celeron’s visit and the first meeting of a court in the Northwest Territory. With its unique features, like an operational 100-year-old mail chute and portraits honoring local historical figures, the courthouse continues to symbolize justice and community identity in Scioto County.

Ohio Courthouses: Seats of Justice - Lawrence County

The Lawrence County Courthouse, originally built in 1852 in Ironton, replaced the first courthouse in Burlington and became a central part of the community’s identity. After a fire in 1875, the current courthouse was completed in 1908 using local limestone and features distinctive architecture, including a copper roof and grand staircases. Beyond its role in justice, the courthouse has hosted major historical events like the country’s longest-running Memorial Day parade and served as a place of refuge during floods, preserving the county's heritage for over a century.

Recognized for her dedication to arts education and cultural heritage, she has received the Ohio Arts Council’s 2021 Ohio Heritage Fellowship Award and created award-winning films that emphasize environmental issues and indigenous culture, earning international acclaim.

2025 Governor's Awards for the Arts Winner in Arts Education

James Swearingen, a dedicated educator and composer from Dayton, Ohio, has significantly influenced music education over a career spanning more than fifty years, including 14 years as the director of instrumental music at Grove City High School and a nearly 30-year tenure at Capital University Conservatory of Music. He has composed over 700 published works tailored to the needs of student musicians, which are widely utilized by educators and band directors nationwide. In addition to his teaching and composing, Swearingen has served as a staff arranger for the Ohio State University Marching Band and remains actively involved in conducting and music workshops.

Our Story

The Ohio Channel is a service of Ohio's public broadcasting stations. A new concept in public affairs programming, the Ohio Channel combines Statehouse coverage with locally produced PBS programs to give a statewide perspective on issues that affect the lives of all Ohioans.

Coverage of Statehouse activities is unedited and is commentary-free to give you an unbiased and open perspective on government activities. The Ohio House of Representatives, the Ohio Senate, and the Supreme Court of Ohio are all covered gavel to gavel. In addition, news conferences and meetings are broadcast across the state.
