LAKE ERIE WATERSPOUTS POSSIBLE

Waterspouts look to be a concern on Lake Erie through Thursday Morning. There is also a high rip current risk across the northeast Ohio beaches through Thursday Evening.

Typically we see waterspouts along the Great Lakes near or just behind a cold front as cooler, drier air moves over the warm lake. The contrast of the warm lake and the cooler air causes the environment around the lake to become unstable, with warmer air rising from the surface of the lake. This rising air can begin rotating, especially if there are weak areas of low pressure or wind shear. This rotation can at times reach the clouds from the water surface, causing a water spout.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely.
