🏋Athlete of the Month: Unsung Strength: Montgomery Vanik’s Throwing Legacy

Throwing isn’t just about strength—it’s about cultivating discipline, focus, and the relentless drive to achieve personal goals. In a sport that doesn’t always get the spotlight, Senior Captain Montgomery Vanik built a legacy in the Dublin Jerome High School (DJHS) throwing program, finding a tight-knit community and a lifelong source of inspiration.

DJHS’s three-year Varsity Letterman and two-year Captain of the Throwing Team, Montgomery Vanik leaves his mark on the DJHS athletic community. His impact on the sport of throwing extends beyond his achievements—it’s his unwavering dedication and mindset for the sport. Montgomery currently holds the school record in the weight throw; qualified for the 2025 Indoor State Meet in shotput, and has the honorable acknowledgement as the 4th farthest shot putter and the 7th farthest discus thrower in Dublin Jerome’s Track and Field history.

Montgomery’s passion for throwing began during his 7th grade Track and Field season. As he entered his senior season of throwing, he reflected on the great mindset, focus, and determination of throwing. He shares that one of the most rewarding aspects of throwing has been its unique community—a disciplined, hardworking group of athletes who excel despite often receiving little recognition. Throwing is not as popular a sport as others and; therefore, many of the famous throwing athletes he has met are often people who work very hard with little acknowledgement. Montgomery draws inspiration from these trailblazing athletes, whose dedication fuels his own pursuit of excellence.

Montgomery's senior season has come to a close as he graduated from Dublin Jerome High School this past May. However, with his dedication, focus, and remarkable achievements, it’s certain that this exceptional athlete will continue to break new ground and inspire those around him in whatever he chooses to do.

🚴Making A Difference: The First Stroll for Life Kids Pelotonia Ride: A Community Triumph

In a heartwarming display of unity and generosity, the inaugural Stroll for Life Kids Pelotonia Ride brought together the Columbus community to support pediatric cancer research. This collaborative effort, involving Stroll publications such as Highland Lakes, Medallion, Muirfield, New Albany, Tartan Fields, Wedgewood, and Worthington Hills, successfully raised over $10,000 for Pelotonia, with proceeds benefiting Nationwide Children's Hospital.

The event was a testament to the power of community and collective action. Inspiring opening remarks were delivered by notable community figures, including Dale Darnell, Carrie Fitros, Director of the Nationwide Children's Foundation, and Carolyn Applehans, Director of Community Engagement for Pelotonia. Their speeches emphasized the importance of community involvement in advancing cancer research, setting a hopeful tone for the day.

With enthusiasm lighting up the event, Todd Alles organized the lineup for the children, marking the start of the heartwarming ride.

The festive atmosphere was enhanced by Chris's Cakes and DJ Tom Tsang, who ensured a celebratory environment. Special thanks go to Signmaster for helping spread the word and Lions Cubs Cookies for providing treats that delighted the young cyclists. Thanks to the generous contributions from sponsors and the enthusiastic participation of the kids, the event successfully raised over $10,000, showcasing the incredible impact of a community united for a common purpose.

The Stroll for Life Kids Pelotonia Ride exemplifies what can be achieved when a community unites for a cause, and we eagerly anticipate continuing this journey together.

⛳Community Event: The Memorial Tournament Brings Muirfield Village Alive

Sunday, June 1 was perfect golf weather in Dublin, OH. On this day, the final round of golf was played at the Muirfield Village Golf Club where Scottie Scheffler came away with a back-to-back win. As a two time Memorial winner himself, Jack Nicklaus said “He reminds me so much of the way I like to play”. Scheffler joins Tiger Woods as the only repeat winner at the Memorial. The tournament brings Muirfield and the surrounding community alive with over 30,000 attendees. It takes a village to pull this off and a special thanks goes out to the 3600 volunteers who help with scanning tickets, selling bears for Nationwide Children’s Hospital, manning the scoreboard, working the Concessions and all the way to the Sandwich Factory volunteers. Another highlight of the week was the dedication ceremony of Muirfield’s own Barbara Nicklaus as the Honoree. Before the ceremony Kathy Kamnikar, Publisher, was honored to present Mrs. Nicklaus with a framed photo of her article from the Stroll May publication. Next year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Memorial Tournament. There will be many things to celebrate June 1-7, 2026.

⛳️As Seen Around the Neighborhood: The Christening of Muirfield's new Pitch and Putt

Muirfield’s PGA feeder team assembled on the corner of Muirfield Drive and Glick Road to christen the new six-hole golf area now called Pitch and Putt while Muirfield Village buzzed with the PGA action. On May 28, 50 junior golfers and the Muirfield Civic Committee hosted a ribbon cutting to officially name the space “Pitch and Putt”. We were joined by former State Senator Stephanie Kunze, who was instrumental in securing the funding, and PGA golfer Jhonattan Luis Vegas, who cut the ribbon and marked the ceremony with comments expressing appreciation for the beauty of Muirfield Village. Vegas complimented the committee on creating this space and spoke fondly of Jack Nicklaus and the course. The two-time Olympian and Venezuelan PGA golfer said playing at Muirfield Village has been a lifelong dream.

Civic Committee President, Ray Dirossi, organized the team with Danielle Maas and Melanie Yoder managing the registrations and event logistics. Greg Merante helped out with the Sound management.

All six holes had a marshal who included Beth Ott and Brian Sokol, Grant Mooi, Karen Souza, Miriam King, Jarrett Jordon, along with Ray DiRossi.

Muirfield’s families coached the young players, encouraging them to take their time and focus on each hole. Skills varied from kids enjoying the music and the balloons to a player who struggled not to cry when he overshot. The event contributed to the “all things golf” vibes in the air during the Memorial Tournament and gave the children a shot at their dreams as well.

The winner of the 6 to 10 age group was 8-year-old Max Williams, and the 11 to 15 age group winner was 11-year-old William Yoder. Ages 1 to 5 “puttered” around in their own tee box.

The golf area is an amenity offered by Muirfield Village for both young and old, with six holes to help residents develop and hone their golf skills.
