🎾Young Achievers: Serving Up Confidence: Marissa Stephenson Prepares for Her First High School Tennis Tryout
Another summer had come and gone, and the start of the 2025–2026 school year was quickly approaching—along with the onset of fall sports tryouts. Whether it was soccer, football, cheer, tennis, golf, or field hockey, many young athletes across Wedgewood began to feel the familiar nerves that accompany this exciting but stressful time of year.
For many students, the best way to combat those tryout jitters was through preparation—working on skills, building strength, and improving conditioning. Wedgewood resident and incoming Bishop Watterson High School freshman Marissa Stephenson did just that as she geared up to try out for the school’s tennis team.
To put her best foot forward, Marissa took private lessons, attended open-court practices with the team, and played regularly with her family. She also lifted weights and incorporated Pilates workouts to ensure her body was ready for the physical demands of the season.
That’s the reality of high school tryouts: for those who make the cut, there’s the opportunity to grow as an athlete, develop teamwork and communication skills, and represent their school. But for others, the disappointment of not making the team can be discouraging—especially when they’ve worked hard and are passionate about their sport.
Marissa’s commitment and attitude were inspiring reminders that tryouts are about more than making the team—they’re about growth, sportsmanship, and believing in yourself. Stroll Wedgewood wishes Marissa and all of our young athletes continued success throughout the season and beyond!
