Each month, I track the prices of the same 20 grocery staples at 19 stores across town. Three of the area grocery stores I track just posted the most expensive baskets I've recorded for them since I started tracking 13 months ago.

Chicken breast and canned tuna also hit new highs last month. On the bright side, eggs hit a new all-time low across the stores I track — $2.78 a dozen on average, down almost 38% since last August.

I track prices at 19 Portland-area stores every month and put it all in a free, searchable database — no store pays for a mention, so it's just the real numbers.

I’ve now tracked the prices of the same 20 items at stores around town for 13 months. Three Portland area stores just logged their highest total basket price in the life of the Portland Price Tracker, and year-over-year data shows the average basket price is up nearly 8%.

WinCo has a reputation: consistent, no-frills, cheap. We decided to test that.

On June 13, we sent 13 volunteers to 13 Portland-area WinCo locations on the same day to check prices on the same 13 staple items — bread, eggs, coffee, produce, meat, bulk goods. 169 data points, one day, one chain.

The branded stuff held up exactly like you'd expect: white bread was $1.48 at all 11 stores that had it. Bulk coffee varied by a single penny across 12 stores. Eggs were within a few cents everywhere.

But the bulk bins told a different story. All-purpose flour ranged from $1.48 to $2.51 — a 70% gap on the same product under WinCo's own label. Ground beef swung by a full dollar per pound between stores, which adds up to about $100 a year if you're buying two pounds a week. Russet potatoes, onions, even bananas all showed real store-to-store variation.

There's no "cheap WinCo" and "expensive WinCo" — the variation is item-specific, not store-specific. But if you're a regular WinCo shopper, this is worth knowing before your next bulk bin run.

Hey, Portland neighbors!

If you're grilling this weekend, WinCo has sweet corn at 38 cents a cob and Albertsons/Safeway has whole watermelons at 49 cents a pound right now — both about as cheap as they get all summer.

QFC is also running buy-one-get-one on bone-in pork back ribs, and ground beef is holding around $5.98/lb. at Jim's Market if you're doing burgers instead.

For 16 months, Stumptown Savings has been my full-time job — tracking grocery prices at 19 Portland-area stores every month, investigating liquor privatization, covering grocery store closures and reopenings, and building free tools like our farmers market map, and more. All of it is free to read. None of it is free to produce.

Right now, about 194 people — roughly 3% of readers — support Stumptown Savings financially. That's about $15,000 a year, before expenses, before taxes, before I pay myself anything for 35+ hours a week of work.
