Middlesex CC Planning Virtual Commencement for 2021 Graduates
Inspired by the commitment and dedication students make to earn their degrees and finish their programs, Middlesex Community College is honored to play a part in their academic journeys. Middlesex’s 2021 Commencement will once again be virtual as the pandemic continues to prevent the college from hosting in-person events.
A virtual Commencement ensures each graduate will be recognized, while all students, faculty and staff remain safe. MCC’s 2021 graduation video will premiere live at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 27 on LTC channel 8 or MCC’s YouTube channel.
In learning how to adapt to circumstances presented by the pandemic, the Middlesex class of 2021 has earned “unique skills and grit,” according to Pamela Flaherty, MCC’s Associate Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students. She believes this determination and flexibility will help them be innovative and successful leaders in the future.
“MCC students persevere, and this has never been truer than throughout this past year,” Flaherty said. “At this year’s Commencement, we are excited to celebrate the accomplishments they have made, highlight the strength they have shown, and wish them well as they continue on with their educational and professional pursuits.”
As Middlesex celebrated 50 years on September 24, 2020, the virtual Commencement will feature a photo retrospective of MCC students from the last 50 years, student speakers, and special video messages from faculty, staff and the community.
To help celebrate, all graduates who complete the graduation application process by April 30, 2021, will automatically receive a special graduation box in the mail. The box will include a 2021 tassel, a keepsake graduation cap and an invitation to the Alumni Association among other items.
Eligible MCC graduates will also have the opportunity to have their photographs taken on campus in May 2021. As a gift from the college, students will receive a free 5x7 photo shipped to them along with proofs to purchase additional photos.
To make this year’s Commencement more personal, MCC’s Office of Marketing Communications has created digital ways for graduates and their families to celebrate, including details for how to host virtual watch parties and downloadable social media graphics and posters.
Visit www.middlesex.mass.edu/graduation/ for more information about this year’s virtual Commencement, graduation box and complimentary graduation photo session.

Ducky Wucky May 15
The Rotary Club of Ayer, Harvard, Shirley and Devens is pleased to announce the 2021 Ducky Wucky River Race will be held on May 15, 2021. The first lucky duck to cross the finish line will win its sponsor dinner for two anywhere in the world!
The duck race has been the premier fundraiser for the Ayer Rotary Club for over 30 years. To sponsor a duck, purchase a ticket from members of the Rotary Club or online at duckywucky.org.
The race will again be run following pandemic protocols with only race officials and duck wranglers in attendance. The grand-prize winner and runner-up winners will be posted on duckywucky.org. The club’s annual Apple Blossom Festival, held annually prior to the race, is postponed until May 2022.
Last year, National Guardsman Kiernan Cournoyer’s duck was the first to cross the finish line. Newly engaged at the time, Cournoyer planned to use the grand prize for a honeymoon. Due to the pandemic, the winner will have two years from the date of the race to book their travel. Past winners have chosen to travel to Paris, Japan, Rome, Australia, Hawaii, Africa, Bali, and of course, Disney World.
The grand prize includes airfare, two nights hotel accommodations and dinner for two. In addition to the grand prize, there are dozens of runner-up prizes including such items as sunset boat cruises, fly fishing lessons and gift certificates to local restaurants and merchants.
Here’s how the race works: thousands of sponsored ducks paddle down the Nashua River from the starting line off of Still River Road in Harvard, with the winning quacker scoring its sponsor the grand prize. Ducky wranglers and booms ensure the ducks are retrieved for next year’s race.
Each sponsored duck raises funds for the Rotary to support many charitable causes, including local food pantries, high school scholarships, youth sports programs, ramps for housebound individuals, dictionaries for third graders, support for local fire and police departments, and international relief efforts.
Tickets are on sale now at duckywucky.org and from Rotary Club members. Tickets are $5 for a single duck, $20 for a flock, or $40 for 13 quackers, with a 50-cent charge for online orders.
This year’s race sponsors include Alexander Advisors, Ayer Moving and Storage, The Bull Run, Gervais Ford, Main Street Bank, Nikopolous Insurance Agency, Phoenix Park, Reese’s Travel Adventures, Robert C. Alario Certified Public Accountants, PC and Thomas E. Sears Insurance Agency, Inc.

Artists may submit up to 2 artworks that have been created within the last two years. An outside juror will select the work to be featured in the exhibition. We are thrilled to announce that this year’s juror is Jamie Uretsky, the Curator at New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks! and a practicing performing artist. For questions about eligibility, please consult the list of eligible towns, contact Terrana Assistant Curator Marjorie Rawle at [email protected].

The registration fee is $30, which includes a year-long FAM individual membership and covers the submission of up to 2 artworks. The deadline to register is May 24.
