The Seattle Seahawks are changing hands in what is now the biggest sale in NFL history.
The estate of late owner Paul Allen has reached an agreement to sell the defending Super Bowl champions to an ownership group led by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Vinod Khosla for a reported $9.612 billion. The sale shatters the previous NFL record of $6.05 billion, set when the Washington Commanders were sold in 2023.
Khosla is best known as the co-founder of Sun Microsystems and founder of Khosla Ventures. He currently owns a minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers, but NFL rules prohibit ownership interests in multiple teams. He will be required to sell that stake before the Seahawks sale can be finalized.
The team’s controlling owner will be Vinod Khosla’s wife, Neeru Khosla, with their son, Neal, also expected to play a leadership role within the organization.
The sale fulfills the wishes of Paul Allen, who purchased the Seahawks in 1997 for just $194 million. After Allen’s death in 2018, his will directed that both the Seahawks and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers eventually be sold, with the proceeds benefiting his charitable foundation. The Trail Blazers were sold earlier this year for a reported $4 billion, and the Seahawks sale is expected to send billions more to the Paul G. Allen Foundation.
The transaction still must be approved by at least 24 of the NFL’s 32 owners, with a vote expected as early as August 26. If approved, it will officially become the richest sale of an NFL franchise ever.
