¡Por primera vez Gulf Stream presenta una sección completamente en Español!

Esta sección acepta obras de cualquier género de acuerdo a nuestra temática de la edición actual.

Temática: Irse

Los seres humanos han escrito su historia a base de partidas: dejamos una tierra desierta por otra fértil. Dejamos a nuestros seres queridos. Dejamos atrás la infancia y todo aquello vinculado a lo que alguna vez fue. Dejamos atrás versiones de nosotros mismos con la esperanza, o el temor, de que, más adelante, nos aguarde otra versión de nosotros.

Pero marcharse no es solo el acto de partir.

Hay cosas que quedan tras la partida: una huella, una camisa, una novela, una carta, un hogar, un recuerdo, un aroma, una impresión. Pensemos en el proceso de marcharse, tanto en la acción misma como en sus ecos. Pensemos en una hoja que cae y se posa sobre las raíces retorcidas de un árbol: al caer, no se marcha del todo.

Y, a veces, nos marchamos sin irnos realmente.

Podemos abandonar una casa y, sin embargo, llevarla dentro. Una ciudad puede volverse más vívida en el recuerdo una vez que hemos cruzado sus fronteras. Podemos dejar a una persona y, no obstante, seguir compartiendo nuestros días con ella bajo el mismo techo. Podemos pasar años intentando dejar atrás una versión de nosotros mismos, solo para descubrir que nos ha seguido.

¿Qué permanece cuando nos marchamos? ¿Y qué es aquello que, a pesar de nuestra partida, se niega a abandonarnos?

Issue 39 theme: leaving 🍂

Humans have written their history in departures: We leave a deserted land for a fruitful one. We leave our loved ones. We leave childhood and all the things tethered to what once was. We leave behind versions of ourselves in the hope, or fear, that somewhere ahead, another version of us is waiting.
 
But leaving is not only the act of parting.
 
There are the things left in departure: a mark, a shirt, a novel, a letter, a home, a memory, a scent, an impression. Think of the process of leaving, both the actual action and its resonances. We think of a leaf once it has fallen and landed onto the gnarled roots of a tree, not really leaving on its leaving. Do we ever leave a place completely?
 
And sometimes, we leave without leaving at all.
 
A house can be left but remain inside us. A city can grow to be more vivid in memory after we have already crossed its borders. We can leave a person but still spend our days with them under the same roof. We can spend years trying to leave a version of ourselves only to find that they have followed us.
 
What remains when we leave? And what, despite our leaving, refuses to leave us?

Editors Note:
I just want to thank everyone for reading, contributing, and interacting with Gulf Stream since Issue 37: WET! I graduated from the MFA program at FIU on Tuesday, which means my time as Editor-in-Chief has come to an end. I've had so much fun putting these sister issues together and seeing the reaction to WET! has meant so much to me. I hope you all enjoy POP! just as much. It's been a privilege working with Gulf Stream and all of your work. I'll be passing the torch to Kamila Izquierdo, which means the magazine will remain in the best of hands. Thanks for putting up with my themed calls. Stay wet, make it pop, and Gulf Stream 4ever 🩵
