CORNELIA — The City of Cornelia has lifted its boil-water advisory after laboratory testing found no evidence of harmful bacteria in a municipal water sample.

The sample was collected at 1:53 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, and analyzed by Food and Dairy Research Associates Inc., a laboratory certified by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Environmental Protection Division.

Testing was completed at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. The laboratory report marked both total coliform bacteria and E. coli as absent.

With the advisory lifted, affected customers may resume using tap water normally for drinking, cooking, brushing their teeth and making ice.

Boil-water advisories are issued as a precaution while officials confirm that a water system remains safe. The laboratory findings indicate that neither of the bacterial contaminants tested for was detected in the sample.

CLARKESVILLE — When the song of the United States Army was performed during Friday evening’s Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony, David Horn rose to his feet.

The moment was part of a military service branch tribute at the Chattahoochee Mountain Fairgrounds, where veterans were invited to stand as the song representing their branch was sung. For Horn, standing represented five years in the Army—and a career of service that continued long after he left uniform.

CLARKESVILLE — Veterans, first responders and community members gathered Friday evening at the Chattahoochee Mountain Fairgrounds to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Bill Miles, commander of Grant-Reeves Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7720 and a past commander of the Georgia Department of Veterans of Foreign Wars, led the remembrance ceremony.

“Tonight, we gather not simply as veterans, first responders, families, neighbors or members of different organizations,” Miles said. “Tonight, we gather as Americans.”

The ceremony coincided with the opening day of the Chattahoochee Mountain Fair and included prayers, patriotic music, military tributes, the posting of colors, a bell-ringing ceremony, a three-round rifle volley and the playing of taps.

Attendance was sparse, though the threat of inclement weather may have discouraged some residents from attending.

The Habersham County Board of Education is scheduled to hold a regular meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 14.The agenda includes approval of minutes from the Aug. 6 work session and the Aug. 10 regular board meeting, along with announcements and recognitions.Recognitions listed on the agenda include the Peach State Federal Credit Union Extra Mile Award, the Peach State Federal Credit Union Service Above Self Award, Georgia School Bus Safety Poster Winners and Student Advocacy Specialists.The board also is scheduled to receive public comment, a financial report and the superintendent’s report.Consent agenda items include per diems for the Aug. 6 work session and Aug.

The Habersham County Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 14, with business items including a radio maintenance agreement and a surplus property donation.

UPDATE: The Georgia State Patrol is taking warrants for the individual involved. Any additional information about him or why he was being stopped by a trooper should be obtained from the Georgia State Patrol.

Manhunt ongoing outside Cornelia following GSP pursuit

Multiple units from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office continue to assist in the search for a man who fled on foot from a Georgia State Patrol traffic stop outside Cornelia this (Friday) afternoon.

The man, described as 5-foot-5 and 160 pounds with a bald head and tattoos on his neck and upper body, was last seen wearing blue jeans and no shirt. He fled from a location off East Walnut Street near Johnson & Johnson in Cornelia and was last seen crossing Chase Road near Sellers Loop.

A tracking dog is working and numerous units from the Sheriff’s Office and local police departments are saturating the area around Chase Road, Camp Creek Road, and Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway.

While the man is not believed to pose a danger, residents and motorists are asked not to approach him but rather to dial 9-1-1 immediately.

Cornelia residents in several neighborhoods are being advised to boil their water following an 8-inch water main break Friday.

The City of Cornelia said water service was temporarily interrupted Sept. 11 while crews made repairs. A boil water notice will remain in effect after service is restored and until the city announces that the notice has been lifted.

Habersham County voters will have several opportunities to cast their ballots ahead of the Nov. 3 general and special elections, with early voting beginning Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Early voting will initially be available at the Habersham County Elections and Voter Registration Office, located at 403 Habersham County Shopping Center in Cornelia. The office will be open for voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 13–23.

The Cornelia location will also offer Saturday voting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 17 and Oct. 24.

During the final week of advance voting, Oct. 26–30, polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at both the Cornelia office and the Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center, located at 120 Paul Franklin Road off Toccoa Highway in Clarkesville.

The aquatic center will also be open for Saturday voting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 24. All eligible Habersham County voters may cast their ballots at either location on Oct. 24 and during the Oct. 26–30 advance voting period.
