Report calls for increased civics focus with hands-on learning

"Social studies instructional time, course requirements and resources have been gradually declining since the standardization movement and the subject's value diminished with each educational policy initiative that pushed civics, history and geography out of the K-8 curriculum," said Tina Heafner, president of the National Council for the Social Studies.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences includes civic projects and service learning among its recommendations for hands-on civics ed.

More Than A Statement—A Commitment

We’ve read several statements over the last few days from orgs, companies, and individuals making it clear where they stand on issues of #brutality as well as their full support for #blacklives, #blackautonomy, and #blackvoices.
As an organization started and run by documentary #filmmakers, we have a unique lens into the ways that #racism and #violence adversely affect the #blackcommunity’s ability to thrive in this country. While we understand the power of #democracy in the #UnitedStates we also see its contradictions. However we stand firm in our commitment to using the power of video, storytelling, and film to transform this current reality and live up to the #philosophy of “...liberty and justice for all.” We think there’s no better time than the present to come out from behind the scenes to share our thoughts and commitments. Thank you for allowing us to be heard and for continued support of our effort to amplify youth voices. -The Civic Life Project Family

The Civic Life Project inspires youth to participate in democracy through documentary filmmaking while receiving mentorship from professional documentarians.

For the last seven years, the Civic Life Project has facilitated online seminars for schools & community groups, training trainers to galvanize youth & create short documentaries on civics issues while also meeting state – mandated Common Core standards.

We complete each cohort with the Civic Life Youth Film Challenge —an exciting festival of youth work. College and high school youth are invited to choose a civic issue of interest and submit a 4 to 8 minute documentary film, which will be viewed by a panel of intergenerational judges, including well known journalists, directors, speakers and activists.

Our winning youth filmmakers receive up to $7000 in cash prizes to encourage further action on the issues of their choosing.

“From New York to Des Moines to Spokane, Wash., members of law enforcement — sometimes clad in riot gear — knelt alongside protesters and marched in solidarity with them. The act has become synonymous with peaceful protests in recent years after football player Colin Kaepernick knelt as part of his protests against police brutality on unarmed black citizens.” Are you taking civic action in your community? You know I'm an advocate of more and better civics education. Here's an interesting Atlantic piece posted by one of my clients doing amazing work to help young people find their civic "voice" and empowering them to express their perspectives through short documentaries. We've got to support creative and effective approaches to education.
