As a retic breeder/keeper I support responsible breeding and selling of retics. I respect the retic industry and all the hard work the breeders put into it. I respect the retic market and pricing. I respect the dedication to working with localities and understand the importance of them - especially now that we don’t have importation.

Because of that…

I will not be supporting or doing business with “High Desert Herps” (Brian Whitehead) in any way. With his recent decision to do everything he can to destroy the locality retic industry, I denounce his actions and behavior. It shows a total lack of respect for retics, and the reptile industry as a whole. His past behavior suggest he doesn't care about retics, the market, bloodlines, or the wellbeing of the animals

Because of his willingness to ruin what we all worked so hard to achieve, I feel the need to address this publicly. I will not be doing any business with him in anyway, nor do I wish to have any of my retics or bloodlines bred into anything hes working with.

Furthermore, with his admission of malice intent. I cannot validate, corroborate, or verify any claims he makes of any localities, or bloodlines he has.

To mass produce retics to intentionally crash the market, with no regards for the retics he’s selling is wrong. This will lead not only to the suffering of retics but will also hurt the retic industry.

Someone who is willing to inflict that much suffering on animals, I have to assume is also willing to lie about localities, bloodlines, and percentages. I will have to assume everything they are doing is for the purpose of harming the retic industry.

He announced a year or so ago he was going to crash the snow project market on purpose and now he’s going after localities. I support other breeders and keepers in this space too much to stay silent. People have put too much work, effort, passion, and love into their animals and businesses to be negatively impacted by someone who does not care.

Thank you for the attention to this matter.

Let’s talk snake bites!

Generally there are 2 reasons a snake is going to bite….

Defensively - the snake is nervous, anxious and afraid. Besides their bite they are defenseless. When you are approaching a snake, even a large snake you look like a large predator to them and often times they have no means of escape so they will hiss and strike. If you are bitten by a defensive snake it will be quick and they will immediately let go.

It feels like a bunch of needles going into you 💉

Food - these are far more uncommon! This generally happens when you have the scent of some sort of prey item on you. Snakes sense things by smell and heat. So if you smell like a mouse, rat, rabbit, pig, goat or several different type of birds and are a warm bodied human chances are your probably going to take one of these bites.

These bites…aren’t as easy to deal with. The snake will usually bite, stay laches on while it wraps its body around you trying to constrict you! To me…the bite feels about the same, just with some continuous pressure!

If you are bit like this make sure you follow these steps the best you can!

- Remain Calm
- Never, EVVVVVVER try and pull the snake’s head off to get it to release the bite. This will result in some of the worst lacerations you’ll probably ever experience. The tips of their teeth are like needles but the rest of the tooth is like a razor blade!
- If you can unwrap the tail, start there
- If you have listerine, vinegar, even alcohol…put a little bit on the snake’s nose and in its mouth! This should get them to release.
- If not…it’s time for you to bit back! Grab the snake’s tail, put it in your mouth and give it a good nibble!

The first 3 pictures are defensive bites.
The last 2 are food bites.

Halmahera!

This locality has been known for their more “aggressive” nature…and honestly that has what has drawn me to them!

“Don’t get a Halma if you don’t like bleeding”.

“Halmas will square up and go 10 rounds with you”.

When working in corrections I’ve always felt most comfortable in chaos, in stressful situations, dealing with the individuals most others didnt want to. The outcome always remained the same, those individuals began to trust and respect me because regardless of what happened inside those cells, I always treated them with respect and understanding…..that’s the same attitude I deal with these and all my other “mean” animals with!
