On Friday, June 5th, Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) recognized its seniors’ achievements and awarded scholarships during the Senior Award Ceremony. Several speakers from different organizations spoke and handed out scholarships, including an introductory speech by vice mayor of Fountain Valley Jim Cunneen. At the beginning of the ceremony, senior Chloe Im lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Senior Evan Ready was the student speaker for the event, delivering an empowering speech about the future of the graduating class.

Roaming Reporter: where do you see yourself in 10 years?

When we were younger, people constantly asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. Back then, the answers came easily. We wanted to be astronauts, athletes, actors, doctors or whatever captured our imagination at the time. Now, as members of the Class of 2026 prepare to graduate, the question feels much harder. Ten years from now seems impossibly reachable.

As I walked around campus asking seniors where they see themselves in a decade, I heard a wide range of answers. Some students spoke confidently about careers they hope to pursue, whether that be in medicine, law, engineering or business. Others imagined themselves starting families, or settling into a life they have worked hard to build. Many shared goals of financial stability and finding work that gives them a sense of purpose.

At the same time, not everyone had a clear answer. High school is often presented as the beginning of a carefully planned path, but life rarely unfolds exactly as expected. These seniors may know what they want next year to look like, but 10 years … that’s a much bigger question. For many of us, the future feels uncertain and full of possibilities all at once.

Beneath the different dreams and plans was a shared hope to build a meaningful life and become the best version of themselves. In 10 years, the Class of 2026 may be scattered across different cities, careers and experiences. But right now, we’re all going to be walking across the same stage next Wednesday, wondering where the road lead.

After nearly 51 years, Fountain Valley High School’s football program has decided to pause one of the school’s longest-running athletic traditions. The decision marks the end of an era for generations of Barons who participated in and followed the tradition.

School and athletic leaders say the change was made with the future of the football program in mind. By stepping away from the tradition, coaches hope to create opportunities that will better position the team for success and strengthen the program moving forward. While the tradition will not continue for now, its impact on the school’s athletic culture and community remains significant.

On Saturday, May 30th, Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) ASB organized and hosted the annual prom dance at Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum. FVHS students and guests arrived well-dressed at the expansive venue with long corridors and ample outdoor space to enjoy live music, a chocolate fountain, desserts, portrait drawing, casino games and a photo booth. While students were dancing inside, the DJ announced the prom king and prom queen about two hours into the night, revealing the winners of the student vote as Irshade Al Sayyed Ahmad and Jolie Ton.

Music is more than just something people play in the background or listen to for entertainment. It actually has a real effect on the brain, and research in neuroscience shows that music can influence mood, memory, focus and even stress levels. When someone listens to music, multiple areas of the brain become active at the same time, including regions linked to emotion, movement and memory. This is one of the reasons music can feel so powerful compared to other sounds in everyday life.

A big part of that effect comes from how music interacts with the brain’s reward system. Listening to songs you enjoy can trigger the release of dopamine, a chemical connected to pleasure and motivation. This is the same type of chemical response people get from things like eating good food or achieving a goal. That’s why a favorite song can instantly change someone’s mood or give them energy when they feel tired. At the same time, slower or softer music can have the opposite effect, helping the body relax and lowering stress levels.

Today, FVHS Seniors of the Class of 2026 gathered in the gym during lunch for the school’s Annual Signing Day, celebrating the different pathways students will pursue after graduation: universities, community colleges, the military and gap years.

Family members and friends attended the event to take photos with seniors in front of signed posters while students proudly wore merchandise representing their future schools.

Members of the FVHS Senate program volunteered throughout the event, helping students sign posters, while also managing a raffle where seniors had the opportunity to win a Raising Cane’s bag and gift card.

The event served as both a celebration of students’ future plans and a reflection of the dedication and perseverance that carried the Class of 2026 through their four years at FVHS.

He knows that there’s always a risk. For sophomore Robert Anguiano, who goes by Robbie, that could span from serious injuries like concussions or sprained ankles to, most devastating of all, failure. Still, he always returns: because there’s nothing that makes him feel more free — more fearless — than gliding along the ramps with a skateboard beneath his sneakers.

Anguiano first picked up skateboarding during the pandemic, when regulations prevented him from playing baseball. His father, who had always been a good skateboarder, decided to respond to the COVID-19 hit by bringing Anguiano and his younger brother out to a skate park.

Anguiano’s Instagram account, has amassed over 1600 followers. He has posted more than 80 clips of himself skating, and also features highlights from his various varsity track and cross country meets, as well as some simple moments with his friends.

Every once in a while, school lunch actually gives people something to look forward to, and Baron Pasta Week is one of those rare moments. This themed week featured a different pasta dish each day, turning a normal lunch line into something people were actually talking about. This got students excited, and had everyone (including myself) speedwalking to the front of the lunch line. With everything from classic Italian-style meals to more creative fusions, the week felt like a mini food festival on campus. Some dishes were clear standouts, while others probably shouldn’t make a comeback.

Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) hosted the HBUHSD Unified Sports Soccer Tournament yesterday.

Students from schools in the district — Ocean View High School, Edison High School, Marina High School, Huntington Beach High School and Westminster High School — came to play in the games, with many cheering on the players.

Some students from FVHS volunteered to coach the team, while students with and without disabilities came together to participate in several playful matches. The FVHS Pep Squad and FVHS Senate came to rally support for the Barons. In addition, some teachers let their students watch the games.
