Sad news…
The Coventry Winter Farmers' Market was started by Aline Hoffman and Barbara Barry, among others who are no longer on the Board of Directors. Prior to 2015, CWFM was initially part of the Coventry summer market program, but when the town took over the summer market, it did not have the staff or funds to run the winter market. And that’s how it started 11 years ago.
Since then, CWFM has been located in the high school and, during Covid, at Patriot’s Park Lodge. As it grew, it required more space to accommodate upwards of 30 vendors each week, many with multiple spaces. This past market season, we expanded our interior space to 42 spaces in the cafeteria and hallway areas.
We also saw some modest growth in our customer attendance each and every year. However, the growth on both fronts hasn’t been enough to sustain many of the vendors and as it is a farmers’ market (it’s not cost effective to grow fresh vegetables in the winter), it has been extremely difficult to lure farmers into the fold.
I have been Market Master and President for the last 4 years and have made many friends over that time. However, the time has come for me to resign. The Board of Directors is mostly made up of retired seniors (along with members who work full time) who have volunteered their time for many years. We had hoped to find people to take over all the tasks of running the market, but unfortunately, have been unable to do so. Therefore, this letter is to inform you that the Coventry Winter Farmers’ Market will be dissolving, and the market will no longer be taking place.
Many of you have been coming to the market regularly and have been supporting our vendors for years. Please continue to support them by going to their brick and mortar or online businesses and farms. I’m sure they would love to see you. Their information can be found below.
The Board of Directors -- Aline, Barbara, Renee, Kathy, David, Jan and myself -- would like to thank you all for such a wonderful experience you have given us.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
