FINAL ROUND OF HERBICIDE APPLICATION FOR 2025 SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 10.
Coventry, CT — The Town of Coventry will be conducting the next round of aquatic herbicide treatments in Lake Wangumbaug (Coventry Lake) on August 13, 2025. These treatments are part of a targeted effort to manage and reduce populations of invasive hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata), a fast-spreading, non-native aquatic plant that threatens the lake’s ecological balance, water quality, and recreational use.
Use Guidelines Following Each Treatment:
• General swimming is permitted, with exceptions noted below. The pelleted herbicide is not a threat to swimmers, but swimmers are asked to exercise caution and give space to boats applying herbicide, especially in shallow areas near the shoreline.
• Patriot’s Park Beach will be closed temporarily in the morning but will be treated first and will re-open shortly after. Lisicke Beach will be closed to swimming until 3:00 PM on each treatment day to allow for safe completion of the application.
• Fishing and boating are permitted.
• Irrigation with lake water is not recommended until after October 10, 2025. The irrigation restriction does not apply to established turf, trees and shrubs, but only to newly seeded turf and to certain plants (including tomatoes, peppers, to***co) from the Solanaceae family. See product specifications for SonarOne® for further details.
The entire lake will be treated using SonarOne®, a pelletized formulation of fluridone, an aquatic herbicide approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). The treatments will be carried out by Solitude Lake Management, a licensed aquatic services contractor specializing in lake and pond management. SonarOne® is designed to work gradually, limiting hydrilla growth while minimizing impacts to native species and other lake uses. The Town of Coventry appreciates the community’s cooperation in this important effort to protect and preserve Coventry Lake for current and future generations.
