The Jackson River Scenic Trail, one of Virginia's newest and most scenic rail trails, just keeps getting better. A recent groundbreaking means the trail will be growing by a couple of miles and crossing into Bath County. The trail is a popular spot for walking, jogging and biking.

One of Virginia’s newest Rail Trail projects is coming to Bath County. Most of the Jackson River Scenic Trail is in neighboring Alleghany County. It’s currently a 14.4-mile crushed gravel trail. With so many amazing events and competitions in the Blue Ridge region, we're delighted to see two events on this list from Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine. Agony in the Alleghanies Gran Fondo and the Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon, Half-Marathon, 10K and 5K made the list. It's great to live in a place where an active, outdoor, healthy lifestyle can be achieved.

Travel blogger Road Trips & Coffee visited the Alleghany Highlands a few months ago. It turns out that he enjoyed one of his favorite meals of the year in Covington. The story is as much about hospitality as it is about delicious food.

No. 17 - Cliff View Golf Club & Inn in Covington, VA
Jen Mann loves to cook. When I arrived in at the Cliff View Golf Club & Inn, checking into a comfortable room in the two-story inn beside the golf course, I had no idea the former club house had been converted into a commercial kitchen – with Jenn and Matthew Sponaugle cooking meals for diners.

When I told Jen I loved burgers, she knew exactly what to make. Served on a brioche bun, the 1/3-pound burger was cooked exactly as I’d asked, piled high with bacon and topped with a tangy barbeque sauce. Along with homemade fries, sitting outside at a table shaded by an umbrella, it was a fantastic meal and a perfect evening in Covington.

"Absolutely magical" is how Virginia is for Lovers describes Humpback Bridge in the snow. We think that's true of our charming downtowns, the Jackson River Scenic Trail, the mountaintops all around the county and pretty much all of the Alleghany Highlands. It's a beautiful place to live in any season but particularly wonderful in winter.

While winter means less time outdoors (especially during COVID-19), it doesn’t mean that all of Virginia’s scenic beauty is gone! Winter brings some incredible sights you won’t find at any other time of the year, from uninterrupted views made possible by bare treelines and awe-inspiring frozen...

It's interesting to read a travel blogger's impression of the Alleghany Highlands from a recent visit. The things that make the region a wonderful place to visit also make it a great place to live — like a latte and good conversation at a local coffee shop or regular visits to the Jackson River Scenic Trail.

The Historic Masonic Theatre in Clifton Forge is a much loved gathering place for the entire county as well as visitors. It's an integral part of the artistic and cultural life of the community, hosting plays, concerts and more. The restoration of the historic building is an inspiring story of people and groups working together. It's a great example of what it means to Live Uniquely.
