Out of Our Hands in great company on Bandcamp's April list for Contemporary Classical music!
Peter Margasak writes:
Lucier’s “Corner Church and High” cites the intersection where Wesleyan’s old music department was located, where one could hear disparate student-produced sounds colliding outside of the building. Sustained long tones on viola, violin, and cello unleash visceral acoustic beating as their sonic veil is pierced by bowed and struck tuned percussion. The tactics are familiar to Lucier admirers, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is a wonderful place to get lost in for 20 minutes. Dykstra’s “32 Middle Tones,” an elliptic play on his old address, fits perfectly here, as cellist Laura Cetilia harmonizes—using both her instrument and her voice—with the chord progressions sketched out on viola and violin. Notated silences break each iteration up, changing subtly with every pass, as the two percussionists provide frictive accents.

Good afternoon,
Koen Nutters has put together an amazing ensemble of performers who go under the name The Names and they have a beautiful new record out April 1 called "Four Names and a Song!" Pre-order is now available via https://www.editions-verde.com/shop/p/the-names-four-names-and-a-song-cd
A bit about the album:
From Matt Marble’s essay "Our Greater Potentials" which appears in the liner notes (included with purchase): “Four Names and a Song" is an encoded love letter addressed to a vital intersection — that of the traditions of AACM jazz and Cagean aleatoric composition, on the one hand, and that of racial injustice and white responsibility, on the other. Using his own musical cipher, Dutch composer and bassist Koen Nutters first translated the names of ensemble members and social justice icons into musical pitches. Each person's unique ‘melodic code’ then naturally gives rise to their own melodic and harmonic figures. In his arrangements Nutters also found inspiration from 1960s jazz harmony, which he abstracts into musical question marks. Chord progressions are slowed down into atmospheric textures suspended in parenthetical silences. Though the music takes on a disembodied character, it doesn't feel escapist. Almost ceremonial, it is more like the construction and adornment of an altar.” Marble goes on to say, “The music of The Names does not provide any solutions to the injustice they meditate upon, nor do they completely fulfill the white responsibility which Angela Davis suggests. But Four Names and a Song is a radical ambience in which to reflect on these powerful voices and on what that responsibility might entail.”
The Names are (in alphabetical order): Sara Barbosa de Campos, Seamus Cater, Heather Frasch, Marielle Groven, Morten Joh, Carina Khorkhordina, Jeroen Kimman, Koen Nutters, Han-earl Park, Gert-Jan Prins, Germaine Sijstermans, Aimée Theriot-Ramos, Quentin Tolimieri

“Parallel Prints” by Marcel Zaes is now available on CD/digital from editions-verde.com and editionsverde.bandcamp.com!
About the album:
With Parallel Prints — the fourth release in the Editions Verde series "Seeing the Forest in a Tree" — Marcel Zaes explores one conceptual idea through 38 iterations realized by the prolific and idiosyncratic new music group Yarn/Wire. The first 19 iterations (for grand piano played by 4 people) are combined in “Parallel Prints #1” while the rest (versions for piano, croatles, drum pads, and ARP 2500) are spread within 19 tracks in “Parallel Prints #2.” Zaes’ Parallel Prints provides the listener with a fascinating sonic terrain which is, no less, further highlighted by Yarn/Wire’s stellar performance over the 3 years spent rehearsing, recording, and algorithmically processing their sounds.

“Correspondences” by Morgan Evan’s-Weiler is now available on CD/digital via editions-verde.com and editionsverde.bandcamp.com
About the album:
With Correspondences — the third release Editions Verde’s series "Seeing the Forest in a Tree" — Morgan Evans-Weiler explores one conceptual idea with three iterations realized by Joseph Clayton Mills, Fraufraulein, and the duo Sarah Hughes and Patrick Farmer. Evans-Weiler’s Correspondences came in the form of an invitation for these artists to interact with his score by the same name and each audial-sculptural realization (the visual aspect is highlighted in the included 16-page booklet) has its own ecological temperament of organic materials and balances within the eye and ear. As Hughes writes in the liner notes: “Morgan Evans-Weiler invited me to realise a newscore intended to be interpreted as both sound and sculpture. For me, these are similar materials: one, a contouring of duration, the other, a contouring of matter. Both are made coherent through processes of composition and/or placement in space.” These three carefully crafted recordings offer a rewarding listening experience for established fans of Morgan’s persistent and impassioned career as a performer and composer while those unfamiliar with Evans-Weiler’s previous work will undoubtedly feel an intrigue for the process and an appreciation for the experience to view his sonic sculptures from three angles.

"Anyone who doesn’t (listen to) (Manuel Pessôa de Lima’s “36 English to Portuguese Lessons”) is doomed. Not to (listen to) him is a serious invisible disease which in time can have terrible consequences. Something similar to a man who has never tasted peaches. He would quietly become sadder... and, probably, little by little, he would lose his hair.” -- (Jordan Dykstra [via Pablo Neruda])
A few news items:
Manuel Pessôa de Lima's album -- and our 6th edition -- entitled "36 Lessons from English to Portuguese", is officially being digitally released on June 2, 2017 worldwide via iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, (and many more) etc. as well as Editions-Verde.com.
A CD ($7) and digital ($5) pre-order has been launched today via https://editionsverde.bandcamp.com/album/ev006-36-english-to-portuguese-lessons where you can also stream the first track.
Finally, Manuel is now finishing up a residency which will culminate in a performance, acting as a album release show on Saturday, May 27 in São Paulo, Brazil. Message him or Jordan at EV for details.
