In January 2022, two teenage brothers from Pharr, Texas—Christian Treviño (17) and Alejandro Treviño (18)—along with their friend Juan Eduardo Melendez (18–19), brut*lly beat the boys' stepfather, Gabriel Quintanilla (42), to de*th after discovering he was s*xu*lly ab*sing their 9-year-old half-sister.
They confronted Quintanilla at their home, then ass*ulted him at three different locations, beating him with brass knuckles and causing severe head tra*ma. They placed his body in a truck and dumped it in an open field near McAllen, where a farmer discovered his co*pse on January 20, 2022.
Quintanilla was already on the national s*x offender registry (2019) and had an active warrant for "continuous s*xual abuse of a child." Police were actually already looking for him for an unrelated s*xual abuse allegation dating back to 2019.
Legal outcome:
Christian Treviño: Charged with capital m*rder; pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years in prison
Alejandro Treviño: Charged only with aggravated assault (didn't deliver fat*l blows); charges were dropped in October 2025 as part of a plea deal
Juan Eduardo Melendez: Charged with capital m*rder and was sentenced to 10 years of probation under deferred adjudication
The case was widely viewed as vigilante justice, raising questions about whether the brothers deserved prison for protecting their sister from an abuser.

In August 2018, Thomas “Tom” Perez Jr. of Fontana, California, called police to report his elderly father missing after the he went out for a short walk with the family dog and never returned. Instead of treating him as a worried son, officers quickly focused on Perez as a m*rder suspect and subjected him to a marathon interrogation lasting about 16–17 hours during which he was sleep‑deprived, denied his psychiatric and bl00d‑pressure medications, and repeatedly lied to — including being told his father’s body had already been found.

Under extreme psychological pressure, Perez gave a detailed false confession that he had sta*bed his father to de*th, after which he became s*ic!dal and was placed on a psychiatric hold. Days later, his father was discovered alive in Northern California, proving that the supposed m*rder had never taken place and that the confession was entirely fabricated under coercion. After suing the City of Fontana, Perez received a roughly $900,000 settlement over the officers’ unconstitutional tactics.

Andreas Lubitz was the co-pilot of Germanwings Flight 9525, which crashed in the French Alps on March 24, 2015, k!lling all 150 on board. Authorities determined he deliberately locked out the captain and flew the plane into terrain as a m*rder-su!c!de, linked to undisclosed severe depression and psychiatric issues. This tragedy prompted new aviation rules requiring two-person cockpit presence.
