4k for $3500? Is this too good to be true? As with any open-source, crowd-funded technology, the real question is, will it catch on? If it does then this could be your opportunity to be one of the first people to own the next generation of low-cost 4k cameras. But if it doesn't catch on, then that's $3500 dollars worth of camera that was obsolete before it was shipped.

Tell us what you think?

Should XP users upgrade to Windows 8? Microsoft thinks so, and it has outlined its argument in a blog post and a 'help' page on its website. Here we explain Microsoft's position as it prepares to stop supporting Windows XP, and outline your options if you are still using a PC running Windows XP.

Why TV, film production is running away from Hollywood

I keep hearing people say this, "Production is leaving LA." Is it really? I continues to be said, but it seems like I'm meeting people every week who are working on some new production in town. Is it possible that there is more nuance to what is going on? What is your opinion?

http://www.dailynews.com/business/20140104/why-tv-film-production-is-running-away-from-hollywood

One hundred years ago, filmmakers tired of paying Thomas Edison patent fees for his cameras ran away from parts east to the little hamlet of Hollywood, California. There they built a mighty industry that pumped out hundreds of movies each year a

Cat Power tongue lashing the sound guy December 11, 2013 @Trees Dallas, TX

Got this from one of my favorite FB groups, Dodgy Technicians. I've never seen someone who knows so little about sound treat an engineer so rudely directly in front of the audience. At the end of the video when she says, "turn down the stage lights and turn up the house lights. I want to be able to see my audience." That is something I have had several very amateur performers ask me for shows. It's a sign that they don't understand the basic conventions of showmanship.

This is what I love about the art world. A few talented people can get together for an afternoon and make something that really raises the bar. This is one of the best timelapse videos I've ever seen, and it only makes me more eager to go out and hone my craft.

I never realized how many dozens of terabytes it takes to shoot on RED.

An editor posted this in a discussion about the cost of film vs digital on Reddit. His point was that HD space can drive the cost of digital up as much if not more than film:

"If you do it by the books this is how it breaks down. Keep in mind, to be properly insured as a feature film, one of the requirements is 3 copies, that's a master, and two back ups.
So, on my last feature, we shot on Red. In red code 48. Not much compression. Lots of data. Let's say we shot around 6tbs of footage. That 6tb of footage now needs to be backed up two more times. 18tb of footage now, on several separate drives. Now, we're doing an off line / on line edit. So that means I needed to transcode out all that footage into prores proxies, using up another roughly 4tbs. Should something happen to the hdd the proxies are On that would mean I'd have to pay for transcoding again and possibly lose all my work on my off line. So I back that drive up. Another 4tb. Were at 26tb for this film already and were not even into shipping drives to VFX houses, post grading, or audio mixing, it'll grow more. All in all, were looking at 30tb for a feature. That's a good chunk of change. Ppl forget, digital is just the same as film. Only in film you only shoot as much film as you can afford, digital, you only shoot as much hdd space as you can afford."

What would you do if you could shoot on Super 8mm with live video preview on your preferred field monitor and synced sound recorded in a high quality lossless digital audio format to an SD which is in the camera itself. This isn't a game changer, it's just awesome!

Some redditors were complaining that the clouds in those timelapse videos I posted were nothing special and that clearly I'm not from LA. Well I've lived here my whole life, and I do timelapse all the time. So I told them this is what a timelapse looks like on a normal, clear day in LA.
