Step back in time to a truly unique celebration: a Christmas dinner hosted underground in the mines of Benham, Kentucky. Led by Lonnie Buchanan, head foreman, this extraordinary event took place around 1973 at International Harvester Mine #10-A. Miners from first and second shifts gathered together to celebrate the season.
The party featured:
Lonnie Buchanan – Foreman
Aaron Creech – Shuttle Car Driver
Elmer McNally – Shuttle Car Driver
Clydale Raines – Maintenance
Clyde Towles – Cutting Machine Operator
Bob Washington – Coal Drill Operator
Paul Davidson – Supply
Charles Tinsley – Supply
Eugene Fields – Belt
The supply men played a special role by cutting a pine tree outside and delivering it underground, decorating it with painted water dummies, pop cans, and icicles. Miners brought their lunchboxes and exchanged Christmas gifts, and food was shared to create a festive atmosphere.
Captured on Super 8 film and converted to VHS, this rare footage provides a glimpse into the camaraderie and creativity of the miners. Mine #10-A was located on First Street in Benham, Kentucky, at the top of the hill to the left of the graveyard.
This account comes from Willie Harrison, who also worked in this mine.
