Found a very short love story I'd written several years ago for a magazine, so I thought I'd share it. Enjoy!

by Camille Eide

Kelsi’s fingers drummed in triple-time on her mousepad, her cheeks burning as she stared at the photos attached to Ryan’s latest email. Why he thought she’d want to see him and his Army friends posing with some blonde babe in fatigues was waaay beyond her. For a smart guy, Ryan could be clueless sometimes. But then, Kelsi couldn’t blame him for not knowing how she truly felt—she’d only admitted it to herself recently.

Four and a half minutes ago, to be exact.

With a violent click of the mouse, she closed the babe photo and typed her reply.

"Ryan - Sorry you’re disappointed, but I’m glad your platoon is leaving that area. If you can’t tell ME what you’re doing, it’s probably not crosswalk duty. BTW, who’s the poor girl? She looks totally bored. I sure hope you weren’t telling her your goat in the latrine story."

The cursor blinked as if to say Tell him. Tell him. TELL him.

How would Ryan react to knowing Kelsi, his oldest friend and fishing buddy, was in love with him?

"Just keep your helmet on and remember how much I—"

Wincing, she deleted “I” and kept typing.

—"everyone appreciates what you and the 535th are doing over there. Write soon. I mean it. Or I’ll come over there and slug you myself. -Kelsi"

She hit send, closed her eyes, and prayed for Ryan’s safety. Loving a soldier serving in the Middle East had drastically improved Kelsi’s prayer life.

For a full week after the blonde babe photo, Kelsi checked her email hourly, willing his name to appear. It was getting harder and harder to not worry when another day ended in silence. Unless Ryan was out on a mission, he usually messaged her every day.

After about a week and a half, a story on FaceBook about the 535th Ranger Company caught her eye. With mounting dread, Kelsi clicked on the link.

While preparing for transport at an unsecured airfield, Ryan’s company had been attacked. The article reported mass injuries and the possible capture of U.S. soldiers.

It’s just another dumb hoax. It has to be...

Frantic, Kelsi searched and found more reports online, but no names or details. She had nothing. All she knew for sure was that she hadn’t heard from Ryan in over a week.

As the reality of what had happened washed over her, Kelsi shoved her laptop away and crumpled to her knees, glad her roommate was gone and no one was around to hear her sobs.
Please, God, no… not Ryan… please, no…

She couldn’t locate Ryan’s mom, whom he hadn’t heard from in years. Kelsi scoured the internet and made calls to military agencies, but since she wasn’t family, no one would give her any information. Numb with a dreadful certainty, she searched all her messages for anything she might have missed.

In her email’s spam folder, one odd message stood out.

It was from Ryan, dated two days before the airfield attack. The message contained only a link that took her to a private YouTube video. Her breath caught at the sudden sight of his blue eyes, brightened by his tanned face.

Bracing herself, she played it.

“Hey, Kelsi.” His hesitant smile wasn’t his usual twisty grin. He glanced away. “Wow. This is harder than I thought, and I’m only talking to a stupid webcam.” Taking a deep breath, he looked straight at her. “I love you, Kelsi. Don’t know why I didn’t tell you before. I guess we’ve been friends so long I didn’t want to risk wrecking that. Trouble is, you’re on my mind day and night, and sometimes, I miss you so much it hurts. But if you don’t feel the same way, I’ll never mention it again, okay?” He puffed a half-laugh. “Like you can forget your fishing buddy’s in love with you. But if you do feel the same way, then... when I get home, I’m taking you out on a real date. Anywhere, as long as it’s not fish.” He leaned closer to the screen. “Truth is, I hate fish.” His face sobered, his voice fell low. “It gets brutal over here, Kels. But I can handle it because of you. You’re what keeps me going. You’re my hero.”

With a nod and a hesitant but hopeful smile, he signed off.

She replayed the video until her swollen eyes and aching heart could take no more. Why couldn’t she have gotten this sooner and replied? Couldn’t she have made sure Ryan knew he was loved before it was too late?

On Sunday, Kelsi only half-heard the sermon about the wise man who built his house on the rock. It was a story she had heard many times in Sunday School. She’d grown up believing she would certainly be like the wise man, one who knew better than to build on sand, who would never be foolish enough to depend on anything but her rock solid, trustworthy God.

After church, she headed out for a walk, needing to escape from the heavy, pressing silence. Without thinking, she ended up at the old railroad bridge where she and Ryan always fished. As painful as it was to be here alone—a stark reminder that the wasn’t here—memories flooded her; moments they spent together that were always easy and honest and fun and simple. In good and bad times, Ryan had always been there for her.

But maybe she had been taking him for granted.

And just maybe, she had been counting on him to always be there for her.

Maybe … these past couple of years, she’d been building on the wrong kind of ground.

Leaning over the rail, she whispered, “Dear God, I’m sorry if I’ve been putting all my hopes in anything other than You. I just want Ryan to be alive and well. Even if it means I never get to see him again. Just as long as he’s okay. That’s all that matters.” Her whisper dissolved into the sounds of gurgling creek below. She continued praying in silence, her skirt ruffling in the wind.

“A little overdressed for fishing, aren't you?”

Kelsi gasped and turned. He was on crutches, but alive! A taxi idled just beyond him. She ran and threw her arms around him, nearly toppling him with her embrace.

“Whoa, easy.” He chuckled, righting himself. “You have to be pretty desperate to tackle a guy on crutches.”

“You’re okay?” Through her tears, she surveyed his face and chest, his bandaged knee, squeezed his arms, and then met his eyes. “When your unit was attacked, and I didn’t hear from you, I was sure… I thought…”

“I’m sorry, I thought you’d been told. When the airfield attack happened, I was already in surgery.” He tapped his leg. “Roadside grenade shrapnel tore up my knee. Then after surgery, I had to be debriefed about the attack.” Anger flickered in his eyes.

“Your friends...?”

He nodded. “Several were injured, but none were captured or killed, thank God.”

“Yes, thank God,” she said, struggling to keep her voice steady. “So why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”

His eyes never left hers. “I wanted catch you off guard.”

“Right. Because giving me a heart attack never gets old.” Eying the waiting cab, she swallowed hard, steadied her nerves. “You’re not staying?”

He dipped his head and studied her carefully. “I was hoping you could tell me that.”

She huffed out a breathless chuckle. “Since when have I ever gotten away with telling you what to do?” Heart pounding, she summoned a hero’s courage. “But there is something I need to tell you. And I’m not letting another day go by without saying it.”

Cupping his face in her hands, she kissed him. And kissed him.

And kissed him.

He returned her kisses and then some, and as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, one thing was certain: Ryan wasn’t going to be needing that cab after all.

This is for you World War II romance lovers!
If you love the history of World War II, the allure of a simple life on a Scottish isle, and a budding romance between and American bomber pilot and a sweet RAF nurse, this is the series for you!
About the series!
Book 1: Broken Wings:
He lives to fly—until a jagged piece of flak changes his life forever.

A tragic childhood has turned American Air Forces Colonel Rob Savage into an outwardly indifferent loner who is afraid to give his heart to anyone. RAF nurse Maggie McGrath has always dreamed of falling in love and settling down in a thatched cottage to raise a croftful of bairns, but the war has taken her far from Innisbraw, her tiny Scots island home.

Hitler’s bloody quest to conquer Europe seems far away when Rob and Maggie are sent to an infirmary on Innisbraw to begin his rehabilitation from disabling injuries. Yet they find themselves caught in a battle between Rob’s past, God’s plan, and the evil some islanders harbor in their souls. Which will triumph?
Book 2: Wing and a Prayer:
Confronting death isn’t the most difficult challenge he will face.

When Colonel Rob Savage recovers enough from a near-death accident to resume command of the demoralized Heavy Bomber Group at Edenoaks Air Base in England, he faces many challenges. As Rob labors to make his group best in Wing again, his bride, Maggie, works long, exhausting hours as an RAF nurse, all the while fearing for Rob’s safety during bombing missions.

The unthinkable happens. Rob and Maggie return to their Scots island of Innisbraw, battling to keep alive their dreams for the future. Rationing, blackouts, and the threat of German U-boat invasions conspire against the newlyweds. Can Rob and Maggie cleave to their faith in God through such hardships and trials as the devastating war goes on and on and on?
Book 3: The Promise of Dawn:
Constant fear, piercing sirens, the darkness of war ... all that fades with The Promise of Dawn

World War II is over, but there's much rebuilding to be done on the wee Scottish isle of Innisbraw. Now a wife and mother, Maggie Savage longs for other lasses to return to their island home, but how can they when there is no way to provide for themselves and their families? Her husband, Rob, driven by his unrelenting dream to build a rescue boat for the local fishermen, continues to be plagued by nightmares of impending disaster.

Will their simple faith in God and love for each other help them find a new dawn for their beloved community?
Book 4: Never Say Goodbye:
True friendship lasts a lifetime, no matter the distance between ...

Rob and Maggie Savage, busy with their growing family and never-ending sea rescues, welcome the return of Rob’s former Air Forces mate, Den Anderson. However, the person Den missed the most on storm-tossed Innisbraw--the very reason for his move to the Scots isle from America--is sweet Fern. She’s determined to close her heart to any man who doesn’t share her beliefs, while Den has no use for a distant, overbearing God.

Join Rob, Maggie, and all the residents of Innisbraw as they welcome new people and face new challenges that test their faith and love for each other.
Book 5: We'll Meet Again:
Will Maggie’s fears stop Rob from following God’s call?

Each time Rob Savage responds to a sea rescue from their Scottish isle, his wife, Maggie, is haunted by nightmares of catastrophe. Could this call be his last? How would she and the children live without Rob? Through stormy rescues, an orphan boy in need of a home, and the mysterious bones of a forgotten child buried long ago, can Maggie and Rob trust God for their futures?

And a special bonus!

Maggie’s Dream—excerpts from the final book in the Thistle series. Dianne wrote these last words just before she left this earth, so not only does this bring Maggie’s dream for her large family to a close, but it also honor’s the author’s dream that these stories be available to anyone who enjoys a sweeping love story set in a life-changing part of history.

Just when it looks like life is finally settling into a natural rhythm, two strangers arrive on the isle of Innisbraw and send Rob back to a very dark place. Will the strangers’ plans threaten Maggie’s dream of a croftful of eight children with her dear Rob at her side?
