UP THE ROAD
EPISODE 2
The Big Picture
Once you pan in, you start to see the “beauty” of Yes Em Boss, and by beauty, I mean ugliness so consistent it almost feels like art.
Step inside RECEPTION, and you’ll see white walls with that hospital sadness, but scuffed floors and flickering lightbulbs remind you it ain’t no healing center. The smell of bleach, sweat, and depression hits you first. If Yankee Candle could bottle it, they’d call it Institutional Regret.
Posters everywhere preach “Rehabilitation!” while a C.O. yells at your cousin just for breathing too loud. Big-ass metal detectors beep like it’s an airport that hates everybody equally. You know it’s serious when even the vending machines look depressed and overpriced.
The YARD is where the circus lives. A big cracked concrete slab with two rusted basketball hoops where dudes swear they’re LeBron, meanwhile, they’re shooting like Charles Barkley after three beers. Weights sit in the corner, held together with tape and prayer. Groups split up, the OGs on the benches, youngsters running their mouths, lifers just staring at the sun like they’re trying to out-stare Mother Nature.
The fence is triple-layered, topped with razor wire sharp enough to slice imagination. R.I.P. to every squirrel dumb enough to try climbing that.
Slide left, you hit the CHOW HALL. Imagine a high school cafeteria, then imagine if the health inspector died in 1994. Gray brick walls, steel tables bolted to the floor, trays dented like NFL helmets. Fluorescent lights give everybody that prison-gray tint. Normally it smells like powdered potatoes and mystery meat, but on rare days when the food actually hits? The chow hall transforms into the happiest place on Earth, like Walmart after tax refunds.
Food gets splattered on tables faster than pickup lines at a Lil Wayne concert, and everything comes with mystery gravy. Don’t matter what the food is, pancakes, rice, even fruit, somehow, gravy touched it.
Keep walking and you land in the UNIT. Row after row of cells, each stacked like shoeboxes somebody ordered off eBay. Paint peels from the walls like dead skin after a sunburn. Floors are waxed in patches, never the whole stretch, so you slip one step and stick the next. Windows are cloudy as gas station sunglasses, they let light in but not hope.

Some cells are decorated with contraband art, magazine clippings taped up like ghetto Pinterest boards. Other cells are just sad and empty, smelling like armpit.
There’s the signature intro track: keys jingling heavy on officers’ belts like a backup drummer in a marching band. Steel doors slam like somebody dropping grand pianos in a warehouse. Radios crackle and bark random codes no one understands except the C.O. holding it. And over all of it, the hum of inmates. Some hollering down the tier, some laughing, some cussing their cellies, all voices bouncing off concrete like echoes at Madison Square Garden.
EDUCATION & THERAPY WING. The classrooms where GED and therapy happen are like community college, but sadder. Scarred desks, busted chairs, chalkboards with dust older than half the inmates. Teachers and therapists come in looking hopeful… and leave looking like war veterans.
ADMIN & OFFICES. Now here’s the real kingdom, the C.O. desk bubble and the offices upstairs. That’s where the Desk Divas perch on swivel chairs like queens, sipping coffee while passing down judgments.
The Warden’s office? All fake wood paneling and dusty-ass diplomas hanging crooked, trying to scream authority, but everybody knows the real bosses are the female C.O.s whispering sweet nothings in the higher-ups’ ears.
SHOWER BAY. Yup… the showers. The most dreaded tourist attraction. A long-ass echo chamber with rusty pipes that huff, puff, and spit water like asthmatic dragons. Water pressure’s on max jet mode, either freezing like Titanic water or hot enough to peel your skin. Everybody watches their back closer than their loofah, ‘cause this is the danger zone. Some dudes wash fast, some just stand in the hot water like it’s church, but everybody’s keeping eyes side-to-side like meerkats.
INFIRMARY. Nurse’s station smells like Vicks. Band-Aids and Tylenol are handed out as the cure to everything. Gunshot wound? “Here, take two ibuprofen and drink some water.” Got COVID? “How ‘bout three ibuprofen.”
Then there’s SOLITARY CONFINEMENT, a.k.a. prison’s own haunted house. Cold, dark, and silent, the type of space that’ll fry your brain if you’re in long enough. Dudes sing to themselves just to hear a sound. You either come out introspective like Socrates or crazy like a cracked-out raccoon.
THE IN-BETWEEN (HALLWAYS, STAIRWELLS, RANDOM CORNERS). This is where deals go down, secrets get whispered, snacks are exchanged, and beefs get planned. If you see two dudes standing real close in a hallway and they’re not whispering? They’re probably up to worse.
Altogether, the prison is like one giant dysfunctional high school where:
• The C.O.s are teachers (half don’t care).
• The inmates are students (half scheming, half trying to graduate).
• The chow hall is the cafeteria from hell.
• The Warden is the principal in charge.
This place might be ugly, violent, hopeless, and loud, but in its own weird, busted way? It’s alive.
The craziest part is, even with all its chaos, drama, and stink, you learn to adapt. You laugh through it, ‘cause if you don’t, it’ll bury you alive.
