On this day in 1970, the Neil Young LP “After the Gold Rush” debuted on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart at #34

“After the Gold Rush” is one of four high-profile albums (all charting within the top fifteen) released by each of the members of folk rock collective Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the wake of their chart-topping 1970 album “Déjà Vu”, along with “Stephen Stills” (Stephen Stills, November 1970), “If I Could Only Remember My Name” (David Crosby, February 1971) and “Songs for Beginners” (Graham Nash, May 1971).

Songs on “After the Gold Rush” were inspired by a screenplay written by Dean Stockwell and Herb Bermann also titled After the Gold Rush. The screenplay's plot involves an apocalyptic ecological disaster that washes away the Topanga Canyon hippie community. Stockwell, a lifelong friend of Young, was also part of the Topanga Canyon artist culture of the time.

The album was recorded with members of both of his associated groups at the time, Crazy Horse and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, as well as the first appearance by long-time collaborator Nils Lofgren.

The bulk of the album was recorded in mid-March 1970 in Young's home studio in Topanga Canyon, dubbed "Redwood Studios".

On the charts “After the Gold Rush” went all the way to #1 in the Netherlands, #5 in Canada, #7 in the UK, #8 in the US, #10 in Spain, #13 in Australia, and #14 in Sweden.

In 2006, Time magazine listed it as one of the "All-Time 100 Albums".

In 2014, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

In 2020, Rolling Stone named the album the 90th greatest album of all time, referring to the album as a "masterpiece".

The album cover was designed by art director Gary Burden, who would go on to work with Young on his album covers until his death.

This month in 1969, the album “Santana” debuted on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart at #149

Over half of the debut studio album by American Latin rock band Santana is comprised of instrumental music, recorded by what was originally a purely free-form jam band, formed in San Francisco in 1966 by Mexican-born guitarist Carlos Santana.

At the suggestion of manager Bill Graham, the band took to writing more conventional songs for more impact, but managed to retain the essence of improvisation in the music.

The album was destined to be a hit, given a boost by the band's performance at the Woodstock Festival earlier that August.

In the charts “Santana” spent more than two years (108 weeks) on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart peaking at #4, also going to #5 in the Netherlands and France, #6 in Canada, #12 in Germany, #14 in Australia, #19 in Norway, and #34 in the UK.

In 2012, Rolling Stone ranked Santana #150 on their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

"Evil Ways", the second single taken from the album, was a US Top 10 hit, reaching #9 and spending thirteen weeks on the chart.

Jim Croce – Time in a Bottle

Sometimes a song feels like it holds a moment in glass—you press play and time stands still. Released in late 1973, the single climbed to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 after Jim Croce’s untimely death. Producer Terry Cashman and Tommy West added a haunting harpsichord part (discovered in the studio) that gives the song its delicate, baroque texture. It was first recorded as part of his 1972 album You Don’t Mess Around with Jim but became a posthumous hit that cemented his legacy. When did you first hear this song, and what did it make you feel?

This week in 1973, the Helen Reddy single “Delta Dawn” hit the #1 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 (September 15)

The song written by former child rockabilly star Larry Collins and songwriter Alex Harvey, was a 1972 Top 10 country hit for Tanya Tucker before it topped the charts for Helen Reddy in 1973, but the first recording of "Delta Dawn" was actually made by Harvey himself, for his self-titled LP released in November 1971.

Bette Midler also recorded "Delta Dawn" for her “The Divine Miss M” debut album, for which her bluesy version was planned as the lead single.

Reddy's single was released June 1973, two days after Midler's. The preemption required a marketing change for Midler, so the original B-side "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" was shopped to radio, itself becoming a Top 10 hit.

Melbourne-born Helen Reddy’s version was her first Australian #1, also topping the charts in the US and Canada, and became her only chart appearance in South Africa, reaching #13, and #20 in New Zealand.
