Before Zillow, Americans were flipping through the Sears catalog to find their next home.

And these weren’t dollhouses or tiny backyard sheds.

The Bedford featured eight rooms, a bathroom, multiple bedrooms and a front porch—all advertised for $2,378 in 1927.

That’s roughly $45,600 in today’s buying power.

The package included many of the materials needed to build it, including lumber, flooring, siding, doors, windows and hardware. Sears even offered financing with “small monthly payments.”

The catch: you still needed land, labor and several construction essentials that weren’t included in the catalog price.

Still… imagine choosing your floor plan from a catalog and having your house arrive by train.
