A new study by Karen Tan, a Middle Tennessee State University professor, explores why U.S. workers often feel guilty about using their paid time off (PTO). After moving from Singapore, Tan noticed many Americans hesitate to take vacation, even though itâs earned.
Surveying 860 full-time workers and interviewing 15 employees, Tan found that 1 in 5 felt âvacation guiltâ, worrying theyâd be judged or seen as less committed.
Some even avoided sharing vacation plans or apologized for taking time off.
This adds to a 2024 Pew survey showing nearly half of
U.S. workers donât use all their PTO. Tan says employers need to create supportive cultures that encourage employees to use their time off without fear of repercussions, so PTO can truly serve its purpose.
