1960. Congo was finally free.
After decades of Belgian colonial rule —
a man stood up and said
this country belongs to its people.
His name was Patrice Lumumba.
35 years old.
Elected by his people.
Loved by his people.
He looked at Congo's land —
the copper — the diamonds —
the uranium — the cobalt —
among the richest mineral wealth
on the face of this earth —
and he said one sentence.
This belongs to Congolese people.
Washington picked up the phone.
Within weeks — the CIA had a file
with his name on it.
Within months — they had a plan.
Within 17 weeks of his election —
Patrice Lumumba was dead.
The CIA funded Mobutu —
Congo's military chief —
paid him — armed him —
backed his coup completely.
Lumumba was hunted down.
Captured. Beaten in front of cameras.
Handed to the men who hated him most.
January 17 1961.
He was executed.
Age 35.
Mobutu took power.
Ruled for 32 years.
Stole billions.
Kept his people in poverty.
The West called him a valued partner.
Congo never recovered.
Armed groups still fight
over those same minerals today.
The same copper. The same cobalt.
The same land Lumumba died for.
The CIA plots were confirmed
in the 1975 Senate Church Committee.
Not one person was prosecuted.
Not one official lost their job.
Not one apology was ever given.
They killed a man
for wanting his country's wealth
to feed his own children.
